« on: March 22, 2010, 03:18:25 PM »
visiting my relatives from long distances and they go out of there way to boil me a chicken for my journey back home.

also, when hmong people ask me to sit at the table. i know most of the hmong kev cai but it still makes me feel awkward.

anything that makes you feel weird/awkward/uncomfortable? please share.

Sometimes....

When people ask me, "Are you married yet?"

And instead of letting me answer, grandma goes "Tsi tau. Nwg laus laus (old) le lod os." :-[

when you have to make a speech and say it correctly in hmong... word for word...

when old people lecture you in riddles in hmong... and then ask if you understand it...

I got some uncooked chicken.  they were too busy and didn't have time to boil the chicken. so they just pack the uncooked chicken.

yea, my hmong kinda sucks. ok my hmong sucks, period. it's not my fault though my parents never sat me down and taught me -- yet they expect us to memorize it then and there.

i dont think most hmong parents will teach you... they expect you to go to those thingys... and listen in carefully and learn for yourself... thats how its done... and passed on... self taught...

a friend of mine once told me that his gf's mom packed him a boiled chicken wrapped up in foil paper... the foil paper set off the security alarm at the security checkpoint in the airport LoL

this was waaaaaaaaaaaay before 9/11 so they weren't that strict yet!

Don't feel too odd about that. Instead, you should be very thankful and feel bless to have someone who care enough about you to do so. I still remember the first time I visited my mom and when I left she did that for me. I refused to take it until she told me that I was right about the preparation being a burden, but when it comes to her son it's not a burden but a show of love and care. It wasn't until later when I reflected back on all of the people I have visited prior to my mom that I fully understood what she said.

When fobby women who you don't even know point out your image flaws in front of others. I'm sure they don't mean it in any awful way instead they think they're trying to help. Take for example, if they see a pimple on your face, they quickly point it out and claim they know of good medication that'll make it go away. Then they go on and on about how great that soap or (non FDA approved) medication is. So in the end, they say they'll try to go find that medication like they're going out of their way just for you when in reality, you don't even want it!

my husband and i.... while we were in CA... we slept over at my uncle's house the night before we flew back to MI... they're pretty traditional... . and they have some chickens in the back yard and was gonna kill a few for our journey back.... i told them that the airport are always changing theirs rules and regulations on what you can bring on the plane... and i dunno if we're allowed to bring it on the plane.. if it turns out we're not.. i don't want to have to throw it out....so they agreed.. and gave us $100 for food instead...

(are we allow to bring such things?)

good question. i know a lot of new rules have been put into effect so i'll have to find out about that. like i couldn't even bring my own water bottle on the plane, it had to be purchased after the security check.
