Taking money from relatives I don't know or I have just met. I was visiting relatives in France and they took me to a wedding (which was in an apartment complex -- my first wedding in an apartment). I was due to get back to Paris so the relatives I stayed with gave me 50 euros because they couldn't send me off with a boiled chicken. Upon seeing my relatives give me money, complete strangers who were probably relatives, started giving me money. It was uncomfortable because you play this game of refusing and them insisting. So I came back with over $200. And their daughter insisted on paying for my train ticket back to Paris! I wrote thank-you cards to them upon my return to Paris. :)

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

Don't feel too odd about that. Instead, you should be very thankful and feel bless to have someone who care enough about you to do so. I still remember the first time I visited my mom and when I left she did that for me. I refused to take it until she told me that I was right about the preparation being a burden, but when it comes to her son it's not a burden but a show of love and care. It wasn't until later when I reflected back on all of the people I have visited prior to my mom that I fully understood what she said.

How can you refuse fresh boiled chicken? They're the best! LOL

Nowadays, the hospitality is almost gone.

I find this kind of defensive attitude pretty common among the younger generation who don't know much Hmong. They always claim their parents never taught them, or only spoke English to them, or wanted them to learn English more than Hmong so that they could succeed in America.

The truth is, even if your parents never spoke Hmong to you, you still had the chance to speak Hmong to them. You could've learned it yourself. You could've bought an English-Hmong dictionary and got caught up on the vocab. So really, don't blame anyone other than yourself. You always had the tools in hand...

AGREE WITH YOU. ITS A SHAME SOME OF THESE HMONG KIDS/YOUNGSTER DON'T SPEAK THEIR OWN LANGUAGE. TRYING TO BE ALL AMERICANIZE AND WHATS SO EVER.. BLAH BLAH BLAH.... YOUR HMONG SPEAK HMONG. LIKE YA'LL PARENTS DON'T SPEAK HMONG. C'MON NOW. >:(

HATE IT, WHEN SOME HMONG PEOPLE SAYS THEY HATE BEING HMONG. OMG!!!! BE PROUD SH*T. LIKE MY HUSBAND SAID YOU AIN'T SMART WHEN YOU KNOWS HOW TO SPEAK ONLY ENIGLISH BUT CANNOT TRANSLATE IT INTO HMONG..YOU AIN'T NOTHING BUT STUPID ;D

visiting my relatives from long distances and they go out of there way to boil me a chicken for my journey back home.

also, when hmong people ask me to sit at the table. i know most of the hmong kev cai but it still makes me feel awkward.

anything that makes you feel weird/awkward/uncomfortable? please share.

Pack you a chicken for your journey. It's customary for relatives to do that but now we're living in the modern age it's really not necessary and it could be substituted for modern snacks or beverages. It works a lot better than having to carry a whole chicken. I've got that before and it does make me feel uncomfortable. lol

Now, when it comes to relatives coming to visit and leaving, I usually urge my parents to just pack the essentials and some snacks alone the way. Whole chicken is just so impractical when you have people flying instead.
