If what happen back then applies then someone should sue or bring charges against her parents...for selling her off...  trafficking children.  That should teach everyone, especially the old folks.  The possibility of her parents getting charge should make her think twice and stop anymore of this from happening

After all these years....hmmmm ....Wrong!!

Good points. Actually, people have said that if the groom is guilty, then the mejkoob, the groom's parents, the fi xov guys, the coj noj coj ua involved in the bride price negotiation talks--all should be considered co-conspirators. Agreed?  Not sure yet, 'tis why I don't date teenagers! Grin

I think we need to sort out what's appropriate as tradition and was is not, and then strike out those that aren't. That way, we don't all get criminalized in our weddings.

I know what you mean. A man cannot have two masters. A man cannot trudge over two bamboo rafts at the same time. Nor can a woman do the same.

Actually she'll be safe for approximately 13 years because all the sentences are consecutive.  8 + 4 + 2 - 1 years and 9 months.

Maybe he doesn't want to give up his property and to pay child support.

I'm still waiting to see if Hmong men in my community are going to scream "foul" on this one so far.  The male radio hosts went beserk when this case just broke out.

The people who were petitioning for Thaying's release after he was already found guilty wrote to the Court:...that Hmong people changed our ages when we entered the U.S. for two reasons: (1) those who wanted to do more schooling lowered their ages, and (2) those who wanted to get public assistance raised their ages.

A few other guys and I didn't like that approach. We were not going to sign the petition because that last statement damaged more Hmong just to help one Hmong. But the people who put the petition together insisted on moving on with the petition still. They were aiming for 10,000 signatures and managed to get about 3,000 near the time of Thaying's sentencing, I think.

The petition they had here were said that it was our culture to marry 12 yr olds.   Cheesy Talk about opening a can of worms.

Whatever dude.  Whatever white boy. Evil
Dreamer's right!  No means no.. even after 6 kids.  If she doesn't feel like, he cannot force himself on her.  Look where it got him -- prison!

And to the whole petition thing, if it equates that the hmong culture allows marriage to 12 yrs old (here in the states), that's dumb period!

why do hmong women always need a husband?  what if she's fed up and doesn't want to go there anymore?  also to add, in this hmong society, i have not seen having lots of kids as a hinder to getting remarried... i've seen it done plenty of times.  ask all the single phers who has kids and remarried again.  just an fyi.
