it is my understanding that the mortality rate was much higher back in the old country, and so to combat this, they had to bare many children as some wouldn't survive.
today in 1st world countries like america and australia, there really is no need to have that many children, but only the older generational hmong folks still do and they're finding that it's not very economically wise.

It also has to do with clans as well. The more family members you have, the more family you will have in the future for help and support in times of need. You won't be lonely and other clan won't be able to step over you.

Big family was an ideal in Hmong's view. More people to help out at the farm. More relatives (siblings) means others are less likely to take advantage of you. More brothers and sisters means when you do get sick, the others can help.

LOL ... welfare checks was just a bonuss when hmong ppls came to US  like everyone said above .. living in the old country mortality rate was high ... help to farm was needed ... clan strength came from large families ... and of course limited or no access to family planning methods .... look at any agrarian underdeveloped society and large families will be prevalent. |

It is related to family values, love, and relationships. ..when you are young and when you will be old. It is about INTER-DEPENDENT...NOT Independent as most your fools are brought up in Amerika here. |

I come from a big family of 5 brothers and 1 sister. Back in the days of Laos, big family meant more help with the land, it was gradually integrated into the culture plus it really gives the elder a sense of belonging knowing that when they grow old, there will always be their children there to take care of them. Nowadays, Hmong people are changing that because it is harder to feed 9 mouths than to feed 4. It is harder to clothe 7 children rather than 3 or 4. I have always like big families and I think it's what sets us apart. My half-uncle on the other hand is really against it, he has 2 girls and 1 boy and he says that's enough.
My dad came from a very small family due to death during the war(2 sister) and he wanted that family atomsphere that's why there are quite a few of us in our family, but when it comes time to kill pigs or cows, we got that down...we dont need nobody else to help us.

We have one lady in our family who I think has many children because of welfare and tax returns..So I think we all knew what she meant when she said it.....The state eventually took all My "aunts" kids away they are being fostered by other family members and to this day she still calls for money and in the begining she would still call around tax time to try and get their SSN's from the family member's who were taking care of them...... SHE IS CRAZY SHE had 7 kids, and her husband dies years ago....So we know they are not HIS |
