LATEST: Wausau woman brutally raped by registered sex offender

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- James Begay, 21, remains in the Marathon County jail on a Department of Corrections hold.

Begay is in custody for allegedly raping a woman right outside her home. Raped right in front of her own home on the city's Westside.

The victim outside around 4 o'clock Wednesday morning to let out her dog. Sitting on her front step, she was attacked, threatened, and brutally raped.

Deputy Chief Bryan Hilts says,"He did use force, he did cause her injuries. It was forceful sexual assault and that's why it's being charged as first degree sexual assault because of the level of violence involved."

The suspect is 21-year-old James Begay. A juvenile sex offender for a 2005 offense in Sawyer County.

Deputy Chief Hilts says, "He was adjudicated as a sex offender as a juvenile for an incident that happened in Sawyer County on October 26, 2005 for a first degree sexual assault of a ten year old child."

At the time Begay was 16 years old that is why he is still considered a juvenile sex offender, even though he is now 21. Begay is supposed to be electronically monitored by the State Department of Juvenile Corrections, but police say at some point Begay cut off his bracelet.

Deputy Chief Hilts says, "When the wiring in that bracelet is cut, it somehow communicates back to the monitoring system that it has been cut, so they can be cut off with a sharp knife or a scissors."

Police unaware a registered sex offender was wondering the streets of Wausau without his bracelet.

Deputy Chief Hilts says, "To my knowledge we were not sent any notification that this guy was violating his ankle bracelet. How frequently does it happen? I don't know. We're certainly not contacted every time an ankle bracelet is cut off."

Begay is in custody on a Department of Corrections hold. First degree sexual assault charges are on the way to the Marathon County District Attorney's Office.
