I know enough of the Hmong that I know that we are never going to unite. And I don't blame the Hmong. I think the right kind of leadership isn't here yet.

But there is a solution for the Hmong though. Just not unity.

The so-called educated people seem to think that uniting Hmong people means holding only ONE New Year Festival. 

The fact that Hmong people are celebrating New Year at all already shows unity in itself. Demanding that everybody give up their right to host their own New Year Festival spells an underlying evilness - CONTROL. Because as we know, those who are advocating we do away with the many New Year Festivals will no doubt elect him/herself as chair/treasurer of the one New Year Festival.

To say Hmong will never be united is an ignorant statement. I used to think that way.

The way to Hmong unity will be education, the more educated we are as a whole the more likely we will have the capacity to understand and tolerate differences and see the bigger picture. We can work together on common goals and achieve those before having minor petty squabbles.

The reason it is so hard to politically unite Hmong ppl is because of lack of education. Hmong ppl will believe rumors and heresay, they will trust in disinformation and slander. That's what gives rise to such varying political opinions.

It also takes more than an educated individual to unite Hmong ppl. This person will have to have political savvy and be able to walk the line between the traditional Hmong leaders and the leaders of the greater American community.

I used to also frustrate myself figuring out whether or not the Hmong people can be united. Then it dawned on me that we already are when we identify ourselves as a Hmong person despite our disagreements regarding family values, religious practices, lifestyle choices and so on. Over the years we have been confused and insistent that unity must be modeled after white Americans, but what we were really seeing from this group is "patriotism". Americans, for example, have a love for their country but not necessarily a love for their people nor for each other. Hmongs do not have a love for a country (because like blacks they are a displaced group), but they have love for their people and each other. That in itself is a united group.
