Man drowns at Fresno apartment pool

A 26-year-old man who couldn't swim drowned Sunday when he jumped into the deep end of a pool in east-central Fresno, police said.

Police said Vang Thao was with younger relatives at a pool at an apartment complex on the 900 block of North Peach Avenue.

A relative told police that he saw Thao jump into the deep end and begin thrashing.

Police said family members threw a life buoy toward Thao, but he could not get to it.

A resident in the complex jumped into the pool and, with the help of other residents, pulled him out, police said.

Police said Thao, who was unresponsive when pulled from the pool, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

Totally fuccked up!!! To died/drowned in one of those kiddie pool. And not one of those relatives knew how to swim? Couldn't one of them just jump in right away to pull him over the moment the man was pounding on the water?

One of the things we Hmong take life for granted nowadays.  We Hmong are highland people but survival skills are natural for us.  Back in Laos and Thailand we could swim under water and catch fish with our bare hands.  We were capable, and able to swim across the Mekong River.  Suck to see that basic skills have been lost.  Talking about it, reminds me of one of my bro who couldn't swim and went to sun splash where a life guard had to help get him out of the water.

Such a tragedy and my heart and prayer goes to the victim's family.
