Hmong Chinese Clans

Okay, so I went to China and met some or were told of these other Hmong clans I never knew existed. This girl who's last name was Tsheb gave me a quick history on her clan history:

Her paternal ancestor had 3 wives, the first wife had so many sons but then she died. The dude married a second wife and the first wife's sons were not loved and were fed what you give to goats. These sons became ancestors of the Yaj clan. The second wife had so many sons as well but she died too. The dude married a third wife and the second wife's sons were not loved and always had to do manual labor using ancient type of vehicles. These sons became the ancestors of the Tsheb clan. The third wife had so many sons too and were loved and fed only the best food. They became ancestors of the Tshau clan. I guess tshau is something good to eat? Anyways, she said even today these three clans can not married because they are essentially brothers.

She said in her village alone there were about 30 clans, but she didn't know all of them off the top of her head. She did mention almost all the Hmong Lao clans though.

My mother said that the Hmong clans in the States are the clans that made it out of China and that there are tons more in China.
I figure her to be correct since she said there are Hmoob Tsom (Cho)? I've yet to meet one . . .

I believe Zag is a derivative of the Hmong Moua. I've heard of Hmoob Zaag or something of that similarity.

I met a Hmong Shi girl in  St. Paul some years ago. She was showing her embroidery work on Marion Street.

I heard a guy say he was Zag, not Zab. He said that on one of those Hmong conference radios earlier in the year. He's currently living somewhere in the U.S. near the border of Mexico. I think it's San Diego.

"Zab" might just be a misspelling on my part as my Hmong isn't very good. Also, Lis = Cai.

From what I've heard from the elders, there's a few other clans that goes by other names as well. For example:

Haam = Taag
Thoj = Dub

(and some others tht I can't think of at the moment)

We have always been told that Kue (Kwm) stemmed from Thao (Thoj). Now the Hmongza poster seems to suggest they originated from different sources.  I wonder how the Kues these days will respond to that.

Talking about that, I had a personal experience in Laos about a Kue guy. He was an old man travelling across villages to Phakheb, near Long Cheng. By night time he happened to reach our village just on another hill by the side of Phakheb. So he asked to stay in our house for the night. We had a guest bed--Hmong houses traditionally had one guest bed each just for guests. (There was no need for motels or hotels or inns or anything of the sort.)  He told me and my brothers that he was Hmoob Kwm and there were very few of them.

That was all I remember of this personal experience. I was a little boy then.

There could be some truth to this. The same girl I was talking to did say cov Xeem Plua yog Xeem Khab tib yam xwb.

So do you all think, those in China know more about our clan system than we do? 

I'm a Lee, and according to what I know from stories passed down from our family, there's only 3 brothers migrated down to Southeast Asian or Laos, thus having all of us. When it comes to the last names, there's only tales in languages( terms)  that we must understand their verbiage, since it's not the same as you and I know today.
