Okay, so just a few weeks ago I was at the Oroville New Year and  the Hmong Association or committee (whoever's in charge of the Hmong New Year) was playing the National Anthem because some white people were there.  It really gets to me that Hmong people are willing to do whatever to please other race. Do you not have respect for your own culture? And you wonder why we don't have a country.

Things like that annoy the crap out of me, too. Especially when they put out tacky "reserved" signs for these white people. First of all, if they're going to treat these people to first class, they should put more effort into making things look professionally nice.

That's why Hmong people don't have a country and can't control their own people because they are too busy trying to impress others. I'm sure those meeka people are laughing at them because it's a freaking new year and they are playing the National Anthem. WTF?

One thing I hate about Hmong committees is that they are filled with OGs who are unwilling to consider ideas and opinions from the younger generations to better these kind of events. (Sort of off topic :D)

I agree w/Yes, they should just play kws txhaj. Also, I think this could also be directed towards Hmong Miskas dancing to India music at the Hmong New Years. I can see why Hmong Miskas would dance in Chinese, Laos, Thai, or Viet ways, but India?

I dont get that either. We're celebrating the "Hmong" culture--it'll only make sense that everything is authentic to Hmongs.

I am sorry for saying this, and it may harm some of you and it may open the eyes of others. but I hope it will actually 'wake u up' from drowing in the isolation and 'hardcore be hmong' pool.

the reason why we dont have a country is because of how many of you have just displayed on here with your comments. in order to reach and grab a hold of an alliance/commrade/befriend/political acquiantance a person or a party must acknowledge their commrades nature also.

to totally avoid your guests culture would be somewhat of an insult, especially on his home soil. to totally blast him with 'your own' overwhelming cultural events repeatedly over and over, may become too much as to a point of disappointment .  this shows unbalance.

is it not a nice gesture to be treated very kindly when you fly to your friends home in florida? or california? or wisconsin? when u arrive and they have prepared a room for your convenience... they have prepared food because of your long trip... they have rented 'your' favorite DVD... they are playing 'your' favorite songs... they plan tomorrows tour and site seeing because you are their guest.... are these things bad?? are you not impressed? or should they shove 'their' DVD in your face for 2 hrs....and make you listen to 'their' music all night...and make a bed for you in the attic....or they say, we didnt have room but theres a hotel across town. poured sink water for you....is that how we treat our guests??

should we worry about them not knowing our culture? well hey...we first gotta be their friends...and accommodate them with small pleasant surprises....i think the part where they will take the time to learn our culture will come, as long as they have become our friend first, then things will fall into place.

we are always trying to force our culture onto those who have walked into our path. we are so concerned that they dont know us and our ways....it should not matter, as most people respect, humans and they dont want to see a difference in color/race and culture....the y just want to enjoy their time with you and hope for a future friendship.

now....playing the american anthem is superior gesture. one, this is THEIR land. two, most of US, ARE AMERICANS!!!!!!!!!!...hold on, did anyone miss that?.....MOST OF US ARE AMERICANS....s o obviously we wont be playing El Savadors anthem...nor will we be playing the communist Lao anthem....nor will we be playing the communist china anthem......ma ybe we should have played the Facist German theme?.....

and no, kws txhaj, if i spelled it right(?), is not equal to a national anthem....how dare anyone compare rock and roll blues and/or kws txhaj and/or japanese geisha music to a national anthem.

so think people....thin k and think real real hard....who u are and how u act....we will not grow until some of u people grow in thought

I don't think the Hmong has a National Anthem...altho ugh I heard that Dr. Yao Dao Yang  had written one for the Hmong people but the Hmong people did not acknowledge it.

I don't think it's wrong to play the U.S. National Anthem at the Hmong New Year.  As much as I love being Hmong and try to perserve what it is that makes me Hmong, I do agree with ToxicCum that we must be able to show others (non-Hmong) who we are and that we are a welcoming culture of other things.

We Hmong adopt things along the way as we migrate throughout the generations from China, to Laos, to Thailand, to Vietnam...etc.  Even in the 3rd world country (Thailand and Laos) at those Hmong New Year, they sing and play music of the land they live.  They adopt the Thai or Laotian culture into their music and arts.  If you were to ask a Hmong-Thai who they are, they will most likely say they are Thai because they have lived with Thai people, they act, speak, and have accept the Thai culture to be their lifestyle.  However, that does not necessarily mean they have forgotten that they are Hmong.

well Hmong are Americans, right? So really no harm in playing the National Anthem

and for the Bollywood dancing, if there is a problem with that then break dancing and modern dancing should also be canceled.

But break dancing and modern dancing are a part of the Hmong Meskas' culture.

Don't get me wrong, I think Bollywood dancing is beautiful, I just don't see how it fits in at the HNY.

ToxicCum, I can see that...

toxic cum: I totally agree with you if it was any other event. Hence, it is Hmong New Year. It is our time to shine and express our love and appreciation for our culture. Meskas shows up to these new years wearing Hmong clothes becaue they GET THE MEANING OF HMONG NEW YEAR.  Choosing to not play that national anthem because it is not Hmong is okay. Btw, what was the reason for the anthem to be played anyway? Since when? To prove to them that yea, we can co exist with you meskas americans?
