it would make sense from a theoretical point of view because 100% is the same as 1.0
so 1/1 = 1

from a practical point of view though.. it doesn't make sense.

Why do more when you can do with less?  Or, say, why make it hard when it's easier?

That's the question.

You know what I don't get?

What happens when you a pizza and divide it once? How do we write this out mathematically?

Because it sounds like 1/1 = 2 huge slices.

to divide something once means to divide it into two. make sense???

so if you have a pizza and wanna divide it once.. the mathematical equation would be..

1 / 2

and the answer would be 1/2 of a pizza.

now if you wanna divide that 1/2 of a pizza again.. the equation would be..

1/2 / 2 =
(make the second number a fraction)
1/2 / 2/1 =
(dividing fractions -- turn the second fraction upside down, then just multiply)
1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4  of a pizza.

simple as pie eh?!  :D

It's because you misunderstand the term "divide it once".  You didn't specify "...into X equal pieces". You take "divide once" to mean divide it into two.  Divide it once is too general.  I could divide it into 4 pieces once.  I could divide it into 2 pieces, just once.  I could divide it into one big piece, just once (1/1).

I'm surpise YAX is the one to ask this question when YAX fully understands the problem, LOL.

YAX explained it pretty well. No one ever says divide it once. If someone asked me divide 2 once, I would simply ask divide 2 by "what". If you were to divide a pizza into two, the logical way would be to say divide the pizza in half, not divide it once.

Maybe you misunderstood the question?  O0

I understand your first question and I understand the second question that someone else asked. I was simply stating that you fully understood the second question so it would be logical that you would fully understand your own question. Especially considering both questions are not very complex.

100%/100% = 100%

when you talk about 100% you really are talking about 1 WHOLE.  If you divided 1 WHOLE into 1 WHOLE, you'll get 1 WHOLE.  It's logical because it can only be broken down into just that...there is no other alternative.

If you divide 1 WHOLE into 2 equal parts, you'll get two equal half.  This is thinking like back in the days of arabian nights when algebra was created.

100%/100% = 100%

a relationship/marriage analogy, if the husband gives 100% effort and the wife the same, the relationship is whole, healthy.

my 2 cents.
