Auction of Apple's first computer expected to top $160k

A rare piece of Apple history will go on sale later this month when Christie's auctions Apple's first product, the Apple I personal computer, for an estimated $160,000-$240,000 on Nov. 23.

The Apple I, acknowledged by many as the first "personal computer," was Apple's first product offering. Approximately 200 units were hand-built by Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak and priced at $666.66. With a completely pre-assembled motherboard, the computer helped to spark the home computer revolution when it was released in July 1976.

High-end auction house Christie's is selling a "superb example" of the Apple I, with an estimate ranging from $160,000-$240,000. Even at the low end of the estimate, the computer will sell for over 60 times its original cost, approximately $2,500 after adjusting for inflation.

Apple I units have become quite the collector's item, with an estimated 30 to 50 still in existence. In 1999, an Apple I reportedly sold for $50,000.

Dude, I know where I can find me the first apple too.

It is being displayed at Deanza college in cupertino, CA.  I used to go to that school and that computer was donated to the technology department.

Now, they are going to put extra security on that glass display model now that we know how much it is worth.

I don't have such model.  But I have a 1989 Mac SE 30.  I think I could sell it for $300.  Maybe will wait for few more years when it is worth $500.  :)

No...you cannot convert the currency at a later time.  It was $213,600 USD at the time it sold.  Look at the Christies auction site.

Apple-1 computer auctioned off for over $211,000; winner in the garage building a case for it
November 24, 2010 01:41 by Joseph L. Flatley

So, that Apple-1 we saw a while back was auctioned off today, for a winning bid of £133,250, or roughly $211,535 -- not bad, considering that the original sale price was (believe it or not!) $666.66. According to the Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for Christie's in London called it "a record for a personal computer sold at auction." Besides the machine itself (with its 8-bit 6502 microprocessor and 8K RAM), the lot included a letter from a certain "Steven Jobs" with his parents' return address. If you happen to be the person who won the auction, we know a guy with a copy of Apple-1 BASIC.

I was only referencing what I read so I could be wrong if that site said the price.
