I'm just a cheap thrill for the moment. When time is low, i'm the most affordable thing out there. When time is flying high, i'm not what you want.

The Hmong people spoke and....
Just for the record.. HINY kicked UHI ass today for anyone that paid attention...
looking forward to hear the excuses :P
i give it a day until everyone shifts over to the fairground :P
funny how history tends to repeat itself.

You must be the spokesperson for the HINY. Did you go to the Sports Complex? There was literally no parking space left and traffic was backed up for like a mile.

18 Xeem New Year

I want to congratulate them for a job well done!!! O0

The parade was a great show and I was so proud to be a Hmong when I saw all those 18 xeem all dressed in Hmong marching. O0

And I had a great time at the fishing tournament. I'm, like everyone else, is hoping to catch fish number 429. O0

the fishing  tourney is the motivation for my s/o to attend the event.
he loves fishing + potential to win $ + get to eat the fish = great investment (for him) = more time for me to shop for dvds for my dad + it will be a nice and sunny day = a great day for us to go to the new year on the 27th...

I went to the Fairground one first today.  A lot less people, vendors than last year.  VP couldn't gave a speech instead let his son Tsav did and that pissed a lot of peeps.  The stage was nice and big like last year.  Speakers were booming just like every year and seems like nothing new.  I found most attendees were out of town, or out of state because many asked me where's the other one at.  The sports tournament was a big flop with the exception of Badminton indoor.  There was only one soccer field and a few volleyball courts in an ugly muddy place.  I don't think a lot of attendees even realized there was a sports tournamennt going on there.  The seating was quite nice because it's in the horse tracks during Fair time.  I think if it wasn't the rain then it would have been a nice venue.

As for the one on Sports complex - I got there like 1:30p.  It took me half a hour to get parking and it was free.  It was pretty safe facility because one has to drive at least a mile to get to the complex.  Here are my negative and positive views about the new one.  Ticket booths are so self made from plywood and it was easy to get in instead of long line.  The complex is so spread out that you don't feel the crowding like at Fairground.  Booths were set up nicely around the streets and you can easily walk from one to the other with less crowds.  I found most locals and athletes attend this one once I got to the sports fields.  There were a lot of ethusiam on flag footballs, Soccers.  Got to see a few flashy soccer games between Tornado vs. Chico, Silver Hawk vs. Lao mix with Hmong from Modesto and Chico, Punisher vs. forgot the other team.  There were a lot of people watching flag football and Soccer.  I have to admit the huge tents they setted up was disappoinment.  They're too small to be like a conference or entertainment room.  They should have setted up an open stage but at least this is their first year.

I missed the parade(Tsa ncej ntxeb ncej ntxhoo) because I was at the Fairground.  I had a lot of fun watching the football and soccer games.  Vendors were nothing new just like flea market yeah but less crowds due to the open spaces.  True, the fishing competition is quite interesting.  It doesn't feel like a new year there rather a sports tournament.  I guess with improvements they can do better next year.  Job well done on the first try though.

If you're planning to go to the UHI New Year (18 Xeem) at the sports complex
« Reply #28 on: December 27, 2010, 06:36:30 AM »
Look I'm not like Gappie who's advertising and promoting his Fairground New Year. The fact of the matter is the New Year at the sports complex has wayyyyyy far more people than the fairground new year even on the first day. There were lots of people who went to the fairground first only to go to the sports complex park. And I would hear people on their phone saying, "Thaub, nej tuaj lub tom no (to their friends at the fairground) xwb os. Lub no coob thiab haib tiag tiag!!!" There's no doubt in my mind that as the day progresses the one at the fairground will be left empty except it's leaders and their family and supporters. From what I saw I wouldn't be surprised if the fairgound will be shut down towards the last few days because vendors are losing big money and everyone's going to the sports complex.

But this is not my reason for posting this thread. My friends, if you're planning on going to the sports complex (18 xeem new year) either go very early like be there at 8 in the morning or very late like 2 in the afternoon. I was there around 9:30 in the morning yesterday and traffic was backed up with 99 percent Hmong cars for it seems like a few miles crawling into the complex gate. Even though I was almost literally there it took me about 30 minutes just to get in.

Someone said parking is free that's not true. He probably came in really late and they just let him zip through. Parking is $5 and admission is $3. And if you're planning on fishing, don't forget your fishing license or you'll have to buy one.
