Reporter, thov zam lub txim nawb mog. I assumed you meant the poppy flower (paj yeeb), but either way, the sun allows photosynthesis to take place for plants. Thank you for sharing the xyoob flowers knowledge because I did not know it was only every 40 years that they bloomed and then died...

You are welcome, NkaujNom.

And you know what? When the bamboo fruits ripen, rats roam all over! You'll find them in your cornfields, too, then!

=) So that's why. I always wondered why they called it the bamboo blossoms (rats seemingly to appear out of nowhere in swarms). That's so scary... Have you ever witnessed it? :o

Somehow the rats know when that time comes around. Nature knows itself, I guess. But, no, I have never witnessed one incident myself. That's because I wasn't born near the time the only incident in Laos happened.  It's a rarity. But I did see lots of rats in our corn and rice granaries. I had to beat some of them down to save the crops.

There are videos of this in certain parts of India though. Same stuff. Must be bamboo's ways.

It must be a scent that is released from the bamboo, alerting rats. They probably travel and possibly a reason why we never seem to see them regularly to expect their raidings, that's what I think. I grew up in the cities, but my parents had a large backyard - so my mom would always plant bamboo to harvest the bamboo shoots. Of course they were young and never blossomed yet, but no matter how much was trimmed they grew so thick and fast that my dad and brothers would always have to set new traps for wandering rats and possums. They were so drawn to the bamboo!
