Dear Dr. pebhmong,

Do some Hmong people know what mental illness is? Also, do they know how to get help for mental illness? Just wondering if you can help  answer  my questions.

You know... many hmong folks don't even know they have mental illness... some even go around asking if people know if hmong people even know what mental illness is.
They say that those hmong folks are lost in transition and asking a question they should already know, wandering the forums foreverrrrr... ......but I herd it was just a myth and I doubt theres anyone like that... right? >:D

Honestly, NO.

The older generation will either

a) Say the person is possessed by a spirit or whatnot.
b) Deny anything is wrong because they don't want to lose face.

But that's Asians in general.  ::)

They call it:

1) Puas xaubmoom
2) Xiam hlwb

But it is a fairly new concept for the Hmong people to actually try and treat it (or at least work with it). Back in the old country, people would just accept the mentally ill as that and leave him/her alone. They make sure to put out a plate so such person doesn't starve to death.  :)

I have no idea what constitues mental illness.  I'm gonna need examples or cases of it.

If lying, cheating, stealing, and conning is a mental illness, then it cannot be helped.

From my experience, Hmong people do recognize mental illness but don't realize there is help.

In most mental disorders, they don't realize that they have a disorder at all, which makes treating much more difficult.  Instead, the person will think everybody else is abnormal, but not them.

No.

They don't understand mental illness so they often miss the symptoms.

The language barrier make it difficult to treat a Hmong person with a mental illness.

I think non-profit organization or government should educate the Hmong public about mental illness.
