The main reason why Obama wanted to save the American manufacturers is that the Unions are a major source of revenue (in addition to activism) for Democrats.
US Auto companies cannot compete with foreign auto makers because they're spending a wealth on their union employees. You can also add that the quality of the American cars are just not as good compared to imports.
Why do you think most Hmong buy imports?

The reason the auto companies were saved is because of national security. Millions of jobs are tied to auto. Parts companies, retail, real estate, etc... If the auto companies collasped the US would have died.
