husband's work laptop
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:57:52 AM »
I use my hsb's laptop to access the internet at home. The only thing is that it's a company laptop and it's routed thru his company. So by any chances, will the sites we visit be shown on his company's server thingy?

Unless your husband's work allow you to use his work laptop, I wouldn't do it. You both are compromising his work.

Anyhow, until the computer people on PH help you, I think I found a pretty good answer for you:

http://superuser.com/questions/184346/i-recently-used-my-work-laptop-while-at-home-and-logged-on-to-the-internet-via-my. Good luck thehotone, hope you don't get caught.

That's the thing I am confuse about. He buys the laptop using their discount so basically its his but he uses their server for internet connection at home. I am figuring that since its his comp.. it should be ok and its not on company time ad I use it at home and on the road as well.

Sounds to me like a personal PC not managed by the company IT but also used for some work.  Likely he's using the company's VPN.  Regardless he should check with his company policy about such usage.  Most company PC's or laptops have user level restrictions or browsing.

You and your husband need to quit accessing the internet.

are you using a wireless card provided by work? it sounds like that's what you are using... if so... chk w/ work policy. just make sure u aren't browsing thru the porn sites.

if ur not using a wireless card.. just connect to your internet connection at home and they won't know since it's a personal laptop.

YEah if you are using their network it's limited to whatever they restrict their network too reguardless of its your personal network or not.

It's simple as pie.  Also you probably dont wanna be doing personal stuff on that network.

I went through all 15k posts and those 2 quotes I found were the only ones so I guess that would make it "everytime".  Feel free to go through all 15k posts and verify by quoting them all.  You need to quote them all to verifying prove "everytime".   Please verify that Im wrong.

lelia.. yea..my hsb says that his company provides the wireless card you mentioned bc he needs the net whereever he goes on his laptop.

poster, i talked to my hsb and it's not restricted. he talked to a friend in IT and he said that they only provide him with one b/c it's needed for his job.

We don't really do anything besides regular net browsing and watching netflix.  :)

If you have Internet access at home and don't have to VPN into your hubby's work place, it's totally safe. You can browse anything you want. If you're scare, just make sure you clear all cookies and temp files.

It doesn't matter if it's after work hours. The thing is that you guys are using their network/internet. No employer likes that especially if it's for personal use. Oh and yes they can view every sites that you guys browse.

It looks like the internet doesn't go through your company. Internet is provided by the card and the card is going through ATT, Sprint, etc but your company pays the bill on it. Internet is not really being relayed to your company then to the "cloud". You are safe to use it as long as you don't exceed the bandwidth plan on the card. Check with the company and see if they can tell you what's the data plan on the card.

Just don't do any obscene surfing because if it gets infected and they have to fix it, they won't be too happy about it. They will report it to the boss.

All activity done on a company's computer is 100% their business.  They will know everything you did on it.  Be careful and respect your husbands work.
