Whats the signifiance of the Hmong Knife?
« on: June 10, 2011, 02:40:43 PM »
Why is that when hmong people travel far they have a hmong knife in the car? I know why some have it underneath the pillow, but what other uses do they use it for?

To answer your question: you have to look very deep inside you and ask are you HMONG. LOL
I rather be lost in the woods with my Hmong knife and a lighter then to have 100 bullets and a gun, Why you might ask.
I can chop woods to make a fire, I can make spears to defend myself or mark my ways out of the woods. Then to have  gun and bullets. You can't see in the dark so no point blind shooting.

Does that answer one of your many requested question.

I'm kind of scared to use a Hmong knife because of how the blade is shaped...and most are too heavy. I prefer those Chinese brand knives that you see at Asian grocery stores.

they carry it in ther car and during long drives because the Hmong knife is a prime suicidal tool. It creates a nice clean cut and one jab/slice kills.

You silly sillies.  ;D

Aside from the hmong knife being a symbol of Hmong, I believe it also ward off bad spirits. I remember when my dad was still alive and we had an alter set up, both my parents would always warn us kids to never pull the Hmong knife from its place. We never did touch it unless my dad took it out to do shaman ceremonies.

I haven't heard anyone taking a knife with them in a car but it could just be extra protection. Of course not the stabbing, "I'll slice you" kind of violence but just more like..."I have this here so I feel safer that the ghosts and spirits will keep their distance". When we go into unknown territory, we like to know we won't be harmed or in any great danger...it's just a sense of safety...that's all.
