I understand we have 'txiv xai' and 'zaj tshoob' but these two are seldom used to do daily/weekly integrity growth reminders...

Do you know if Hmong have a standard life lessons?

Example like this from Buddhism.  Very short.

We need to stay easy because when you come to be a monk.  Before I became a monk I had a lot of problems such as working and taking care of my family.  There were a lot of problems when we came here.  We didn’t have the money we needed but I just stayed to help people and take the work and help everyone to make a good thing.  After all everything is born and we are human.  When we are first born we are happy and eventually we die.  It is just the nature of things so we should do good things with what we have.  It is important to share the words of Buddha and teach the young people to respect their parents and take care of them.  Remember one of the Ten Commandments tells you to “Honor your father and mother that your days may be long on the earth.”  You should also not be greedy because it gains you nothing. We have only a short time to live together.  You should spend every precious moment you can with each other and talk to them.  Try to understand them but some times we have to remember we all are human.  We must remember we were once babies and they care for us and we must do the same for them as they get older.

Thanks Yaweh,

How do you put that into something that is preach-able daily and for generations to use?

mong are very confusing at times, especially their "one-liner" explanations.  what does "ua txiv ntxhias" mean?  people have different versions of it.  also keep in mind that in America, "ua txiv ntxhias" may not have the same "meaning" as in laos.  whatever the case is, since this thread asks about "mong," lets look at it from the perspective of a mong.  just keep in mind that if a mong were to practice these "mong" things, they must look at it from a mong perspective to understand them.  for example, "ua txiv ntxhias" in america.....on e of the closest meaning i could think of is "be independent."  however, if you were to apply this to mong, then it does not work simply because being independent implies, in a  way, "separation" from the group/crowd/family.  because of this, you have to understand the mentality of mong to understand these things.  most mong in america are confused about this, and when they try to "ua txiv ntxhias," it creates lots of problems that are predicaments to the mong.  another example would be when mong refers to family, it is not your typical eurocentric "nuclear family (parents/kids)," along with the bride's side of the family.  when mong say "family," mong usually mean "parents/self/kids/and kwvtij of the same clan.

so to answer your question, we have to preach it carefully in a "mong way", probably in the order of most important (as a whole...not as an individual) to least important.  Preach to kids that for a mong, a mouse will feed a village (whole) instead of feeding one person even if that mouse belongs to that person.  teach to kids to disregard what their peers says or what they learned in school--and like touger xiong said, "think like a mong."
