the proper pronouciation comes from "LAUJ" not lo.

this issue is not a hmong culture issue, it's an english spelling issue during the coming to ameslikas interviewing process. different u.n. personnel, different english spelling.

lo
lor
lau

LAUJ  O0

I think the OG's that came to the USA had no idea of how to spell their own last name in English..There fore the Som, Khang and Hang are almost the same spelling. the
Chang, Cha, Pha almost are alike. The Thao and Thor are the same.

You know Hmoob Lauj well then. Some families have spelled it "Lao" too instead of the popular Lo, Lor.

Lo and Lor, is just like Cha and Chang. Depends on how your parents or whoever it was pronounced at the time of thier entry into the US.

"Lauj" is Hmonglish.  So for what I know the spelling should just be "Lo."  Lau, Lao, may be OK, but Lor (which I think is totally off is unacceptable).  If you went to Thailand or Laos and some OG's there ask you what clan you from and you told them LOR they be like WTF is that?  Cause it does not sound like Lo, Lau, Lao, Lauj.

I got your humor in this too. For instance, if a Hmong Lauj guy was to legally change his last name and have it re-spelled as "LOW", then that is just one moronic and knucklehead move. That would be real offensive to the real Hmong Laujs out there.

lauj is not hmonglish. lauj the spelling and hmong pronunciation for the xeem. now if i would to visit laos and an og ask me for my clan name, i would say "LAUJ" not l-o-r. would you say I am xeem LO, LOR, LAO, LAU (pronounced in english) to a hmong OG or simply in your best hmong dialect, "kuv yog hmoob xeem LAUJ"?

same goes for all other english spelled last name. kuv yog xeem THOJ not thao to hmong og. kuv yog xeem YAJ not i am yang.

same with english hmong names; SENG is not the same hmong tone as XEEM neither is TOU is not TUB! do you understand?

likewise, sis.

i don't know about intelligence, but the hmong culture is dying due to assimilation and our own hmong mixed-leading of culture and religion. once you understand the "why's" it's easy as understanding the significance of the easter bunny and santa claus. if a hmong-american can pass the 6th grade and learn english, a week of hmong class is day in kindergarten.

perseverance!  O0
