Managing EditorA 25-year-old man, who pleaded guilty in Anoka County District Court to robbing two banks, one in Spring Lake Park and the other in Fridley, won’t serve any prison time.
Instead, Steve Vang, Little Canada, who entered guilty pleas to two counts of second-degree aggravated robbery, was placed on probation for 15 years at a sentencing hearing July 28.
But he was jailed for 180 days with credit for eight days service, reporting Sept. 1.
Probation conditions include no alcohol- or drug-related offenses, nor any involving assaultive behavior.
In addition, he was ordered not to possess or use weapons, make restitution to the two banks, follow recommendation
s of a gambling evaluation and not to enter gambling establishments
.
Vang was accused of robbing a Fridley Twin City Federal (TCF) and a Spring Lake Park Wells Fargo branch in June 2010.
The Wells Fargo branch at 8455 Plaza Blvd., Spring Lake Park, was robbed shortly before 5:30 p.m. June 23, 2010 by an Asian man in his early to mid 20s.
The man approached a teller and presented a note which demanded cash from a teller.
The TCF bank at 5205 Central Ave. N.E. in Fridley was robbed June 8, 2010.
The description of the suspect in the Spring Lake Park and Fridley bank robberies matched.
According to the complaint, Vang walked away with almost $2,500 in cash from the two robberies.
In both robberies, Vang, was observed on bank surveillance footage.
His girlfriend confirmed Vang’s identity when interviewed by the police.
Vang was located and arrested by police July 29, 2010.
