You gotta be kidding me...even an elementary school teacher in a small town such as Los Banos, California, where I used to work at gets about that much after 10 years of service...and they could get to $80,000 a year after 20 years of service.

Salaries vary across the country and by localities, SW. Gustavus is located about 2 hours southwest of the Twin Cities, close to SD where it's all just farms and woodlands. I think the Green Giant vegetable valley is there.

I understand all of that...localit ies and cost of living plays a big part. There are some places in the country even today where an elementary school teacher starts at like $20,000 a year. That to me, is just not only so wrong and a slap in the face, but just plain insulting to teachers.

But in the case of that Hmong guy. Not only he have all those impressive credentials, an impressive job title, and not to mention, in a University, and to be making that kind of money, it just feels strange to me.

I say starting at $80,000 a year is not a fair but an okay wage. This is how much a starting school psychologist makes in a year in 2007 at the Los Banos Unified School District in Los Banos,  California, a small town 30 miles from Merced.

Profoessors get paid jack...60k-100k.  An engineer gets like almost 60k starting with a BSE/BS.

You have to be a Dean to make like 150k-200k.

And yet Scott Walker is complaining professors and teachers are getting paid too much.

I suppose if you include their pension, health/benefit, and etc... they actually make 20-30k more if you normalize it against a regular person who works 40hours.

A teacher who makes 60k with pension and health benefit at no cost plus having 3 month off...  Let's normalize that data.

Salary: 46k
Health benefit at zero cost: $500x12per month (that's extra they get that a regulatory employee pays)
Pension (assume 15% state contribution I think it might be more???someone confirm?):  575 per month
Works 9 of 12 months: Normalization factor

Compensation =(46000+500x12+575x12)/.75 = 78.5k  (no health deduction was factor since they receive 100% coverage by government, which can result in significantly higher wage)

So not bad you say right?  60% higher than a normal wage person at 45k who works for public companies.

I know they work a lot of hours too...Who doesn't as a salary worker.

Conclusion:  Teachers make very good $$$.

He probably doesn't remember me since my cousins and I were teenagers but we all went to Laos and Thailand back in 04 but splitted when we got there and met up again when we were going to leave. He's a good friend of my cousin.

Congratulation s to him and the job!

Her Vang - he loves school, academically, and big dreams.  I remember him and a couple friends back in the Lindhurst days.  Belated congrats to him.  I think he deserves so much better thought.  A Ph.D is more than being an Assistant (assistant is another word for slave).  If I was him I wouldn't settle for it, unless, of course this is a strategic move.

On the salary deal...I don't think they pay that much.  I know Her Vang is not so much about money.  I think he's more about 'fame'.  Most, if not all, of his school fees were taken care by scholarships.  From Davidson college to Notra Dammeeee, to UMN, etc.

Enough...given out my identity already.
