7:30 PM, Aug. 27, 2011TOWN OF MENASHA — A fire that started Friday afternoon on a wooden exterior deck caused extensive damage to a home at 725 Peppergrass Lane.
Firefighters responded to the home owned by Myyia Chang and Singnaye Xiong about 3:30 p.m. Friday after a neighbor observed smoke and flames on the backside of the house.
“It appears the fire started on the top of the deck,” Fire Chief Keith Kiesow said Saturday. “We’re trying to rule out all the (ignition) sources. It’s still under investigation.”
Kiesow estimated damage at $150,000, including the building and contents.
The family was home at the time and escaped without injury. Red Cross officials were called in to provide assistance but Kiesow said the family went to live with relatives in Oshkosh.
“It started on the deck and by the time someone noticed it, it was burning up the vinyl siding and it went right into the attic,” Kiesow said. “Once it got the attic, then it basically burned the roof off.” There was water and smoke damage throughout the rest of the home, he said.
“It’s going to be pretty close to a total loss, most likely,” Kiesow said. “The insurance company was on scene.”
