Tell me about shocks
« on: October 23, 2011, 10:05:06 PM »
So I just bought this bike and have questions about the shocks.  The seller adjusted the front and rear shocks to the lowest setting so I can reach the ground.  What's the downside?  I'm sure there is one.  Like my professor used to say "There's no free lunch".   :D

The bike has aftermarket front and rear shocks.  Anyhow the bike has a Fox racing shock thing on it.  I don't really know what it does.  See pic.  It has this knob that allows you to adjust it.  I just started reading about it and it allows you to adjust "sag".  But don't most bike has this feature.

Anyways I'd appreciate any inputs.

First of all, congrats for picking up the Veefer 800  O0!

"downside?" Bottoming out (depending on load weight) and harsher ride.

The "knob" looks like some kind of compression damping adjuster. It effects traction and bottoming out resistance. Increase the compression damping, traction improves, and decrease it, less traction. Read more about it and adjust it to meet your weight, riding environment, and riding style.

And yes, most modern sportbikes comes with it stock.

Nice VFR!  The stock suspension on the VFR is quite plush and not suited for aggressive riding on canyon roads.  Plus the stock suspension only has damping and lacks the rebound (or the other way around).  The after market stocks are design better to give rider more ways to tune his/her suspension.  I have the same bike and it's a 1998.  It's a great all around bike.

As for your question, lower the rear shock will give you a much harsher ride and could possibly lighten the front if the rake angle is change too much.  Too light in the front will create instability and affect your performance in the turn.  Did the previous owner also lower the front forks to the same amount?  Unless you ride very aggressive on canyon roads or on the track, I don't think you'll notice much differences other than a harsher ride.

The first thing you should do is set the "sag" for your weight and then tune the damping and rebound on the forks and rear shock to your liking.  Google "how to set sag" for further info.
