A Sacramento man was jailed Sunday after a routine traffic stop ended with the man admitting to stealing a catalytic converter that same day, the Marysville Police Department reported.
Xao Lee, 43, was booked into the Yuba County Jail on an outstanding warrant from Sacramento and driving on a suspended license. Catalytic converter thefts have been on the rise in Yuba-Sutter in recent months, Sgt. Chris Sachs said.
“We’re still investigating to see if there are possible links to other cases,” Sachs said. “Hopefully, this will put a damper on some of these types of thefts.”
Police said Lee admitted to stealing the converter that was found in his car. The part was taken from a Toyota 4Runner in the 600 block of F Street in Marysville, police said.
Most stolen converters are sold for scrap metal that can sell for around $150 on the black market. It can cost vehicle owners up to $2,000 to replace.
