In 1 Corinthians 15:55-58,  Paul enhanced his joy at the reality of resurrection by quoting from Isaiah 25:8 and Hosea 13:14.  That latter quote taunts death as if it were a bee whose sting was removed.  That sting was the sin that was exposed by the law of God, but was conquered by Christ in His death.

The hope of resurrection make s all the efforts and sacrifices in the Lord's work worth it.  No work done in His name is wasted in light of eternal glory and reward.

Blessed Assurance

John Maxwell’s 21 Qualities of a Leader – Competence:  A Necessary Step on the Road to Excellence Luke 14:28-32

First and foremost, I have been lead to this verse on one of the hardest of day of my life… and even after a few weeks, still find myself going back to Luke 14.  No matter how chaotic my life gets, one thing I do know is that God knows exactly what I need, when I need it and he always provides.

“Labeling someone competent or incompetent may seem judgemental and narrow, yet all leaders must possess a level of competence that enables them to get the job done.  [We] cannot do without competence.

Everyone knows that leaders must demonstrate a level of competence in order to gain the trust and respect of followers.  No one chooses to follow an incompetent leader over a competent one, regarless of personality.  Friendship is not synonymous with  leadership; people can like you as a friend but not follow you as a leader. To the degree they feel you are incompetent to lead, they will distance themselves from your leadership.

Competence goes beyond words.  It’s the leader’s ability to say it, plan it and do it in such a way that others know you know your business – and know that they want to follow you.  Competence must be sought at every organizational level.  Incompetence can be tolerated nowhere – IF YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH what you have set out to do.

Competence requires three ingredients:

1.    Commitment – Our commitment must look like disdain for everyone else.  We must pick up our cross and follow… meaning that we do not count the cost, but keep our eyes on the end result.  The Justice Committee of MN went on faith – working endlessly on the Dylan Yang case.  We worked on faith, dedicating 20 to 30 hours every month during the month of March and April and then ramping it up to every single night, till way past 10 pm every night during the month of May.

2.   Resources – A builder must calculate whether he had enough to finish building a tower.  Determine whether your resources, gifts, talents, and abilities are available to do the job.  The Justice Committee, both at the National level and at the local level, was made up of people from all ages and all backgrounds.  Combined together, had the gifts, talents, and abilities… and we worked day and night to get the resources needed to move more than 1,000 Hmong people to Wausau, Wisconsin for a Peace March to Save Our Children… to heal our community, to reflect, to seek accountability, and to seek leniency for Dylan Yang.

3.   Intelligence – [We] seek counsel to know whether we should go to battle [or not].  Part of competence is the insight to know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.  We had a comprehensive team of seasoned advocates such as Tou Ger Bennett Xiong who, along with Mao Khang, worked out all the logistics of the March; Paula Yang who had a voice that could reach the heart of many people; Lis Pos Vwj, who wrote the community letter to the judge; Yeng Hang, who first released the story that grabbed the hearts of advocates across the nation and who designed the Dylan Yang t-shirts;  Hmong American Bar Association of Minnesota, who provided advice and direction so that we don’t cause harm to Dylan’s case as we sought to help him; 18 Clan Council of Minnesota who stood by us as an umbrella, as a parent watching over their children, ready to teach, guide, and help get out of trouble - Went on TV and Radio Shows with us and hosted a townhall meeting to promote the peace march; Yang Wa Meng of Minnesota, who set up the townhall meeting; donated money towards water for the townhall meeting and food for the Peace March; Yang Council of Wisconsin, who provided 2,000 eggrolls for the Peace March; Star Security of St. Paul, MN, who came to ensure that we were safe, who had our backs; and all the many people who donated money from all over the states, from Sea to Sea – Notably, Jouaxue Vang who donated $1,044 towards the T-shirts and much more towards printing; Moua Yang of Hogmaster, who dontated $1,000; Jerry Yang of Dynamite Grill and Pocket 8, who donated $1,000; and Dr. Mai True Lee of Health and Wellness Chiropractic Clinic, who donated $1,000 to help support the college students for the March; among many many many many others who have donated; as well as all those who lend a voice in support of Dylan Yang.  Justice Committee of MN Chapter: Shawn Thao, Maiah Vang, Jue Vang, Maytinee Xiong, Kolia Vang, Mai Thao, Gao Nou Xiong, Peng Vang, James Vang, Robert Thao, Sydney Chang, Zong Khang Yang, Pa Yang, Kaabsivsam Yang, Sonny Vue, Jouaxue Vang, Chee Yang, Mao Malle, and Kat Her.
