A 25-year-old Sheboygan man was due in court Tuesday on charges stemming from a high-speed crash that seriously injured him and a passenger in November.
Bruce Y. Yang, of 1011 Bluff Ave., was traveling 92 mph when his car went airborne at a south-side railroad crossing, striking a parked car and a tree about 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12, according to a criminal complaint. Yang’s injuries led to a Flight For Life trip to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee, and the passenger — 21-year-old Michael L. Yang of Sheboygan — suffered facial fractures that required reconstructive surgery.
Bruce Yang was charged Thursday with second-degree reckless endangerment, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. He is scheduled for an initial court appearance at 1:30 p.m. today.
According to police:
The incident began when Bruce Yang squealed his tires while pulling away from a stoplight on South Business Drive at Union Avenue, an action observed by a police officer several cars back. The officer activated lights and sirens and pursued as Bruce Yang headed south to Ashland Avenue and east to South 18th Street, consistently topping 50 mph.
The officer called off the pursuit after losing sight of the vehicle while southbound on 18th Street, but was advised moments later of a crash at 18th and Garfield Avenue. The Honda Civic involved matched the vehicle from the pursuit.
A crash reconstruction determined Bruce Yang was traveling 92 mph in a 25-mph zone when his car went airborne across the tracks, turning 30 degrees clockwise in the air. The car then left 216 feet of skid marks before striking a parked Chevy Impala, pushing it about 20 feet into the roadway.
The Civic then struck a tree and came to rest on a lawn. Both cars were totaled.
Yang smelled of intoxicants and admitted to drinking four beers, but he registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.04, below the legal limit of 0.08.
