Going off on a tangent here, what is the significance of the sub clans (e.g. 1, 3, 5, 7, etc..)?
The original clan divided itself into subclans because of the sons born by the various wives of the great, great, great, great...grandp
a. For example, if first wife got 9 sons, their rituals made them the 9 txig subclan that Nceeg is referring to. The second wife's 5 sons followed the 5 txig ritual. Etc.
Over the years, some subclans have been created but not on that anymore. If they turned themselves into a subclan of a larger clan, they call themselves by a particular number to identify their subclan, not because they were descendants of a wife who had that number of sons. So, the 7 txig subclan that changed itself from some other clan in the modern days has come to identify itself by this number.
It's true that each Hmong clan has several subclans, usually 3. I haven't heard of more than that. But 3 is typical. (Subclans are members of the same clan but just do their family rituals a bit differently from one another.)
How do we get along? I would have the Nobel Peace Prize already if I had the answer.
