SACRAMENTO—
You should be able to walk in your own neighborhood without getting clobbered by a bunch of thugs.
Sacramento Police is looking for a group who ganged up on a 62-year-old man for his cell phone at 24th Street and Casa Linda Drive.
Family members say Cher Pao Yang was just doing what he'd done a thousand times, walking along Steve Jones park, when he was beaten up.
The advice he'd given his sons about how to handle someone hassling you on the street didn't work for him.
Doctors are waiting for his facial swelling to diminish so they can tell if actually suffered a broken nose in yesterday's attack.
Yang was resting Sunday and didn’t want to speak on camera, but one of his sons described his ordeal.
"All of a sudden they were calling him bit**, calling him names and he just laughed like he told us to do it. And they just came out of nowhere and punched him," said Xiong Yang.
Police are looking for one white female and three black men in connection with the ambush.
Yang is a retired mechanic and former soldier of the Laotian army and was walking home from his son's house when he was targeted.
Other relatives say they often call the police when they see suspicious activity in the neighborhood, but that it usually takes hours for them to respond.
They feel the area needs more attention.
