A teacher at a Clovis Unified elementary used his cellular phone on several occasions to record his sexual abuse of a minor, according to a criminal complaint filed today in federal court.
The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court, charges Neng Yang, 43, of Fresno, with producing child pornography.
Yang, a second-grade teacher at Freedom Elementary, was arrested Friday. Clovis police took him into custody on 18 counts of child molestation, one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child, nine counts of having a minor perform prohibited acts and nine counts of possessing material depicting a minor engaging in or simulating sexual conduct.
According to the federal complaint, Yang used the cell phone to record abuse between Jan. 3 and Jan. 26.
"This case is particularly disturbing because the suspect teaches young, vulnerable children and is in a position of trust,” said Paul Leonardi, resident agent in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations in Fresno.
Authorities were concerned that other children the school may have been victims, Leonardi said.
Yang is scheduled to make an initial court appearance this afternoon.
If convicted, Yang faces a mandatory prison term of between 15 and 30 years, a $250,000 fine, and a life term of supervised release.
The case is being handled as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative by the federal Department of Justice to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
