Anyhone running a home server?
« on: November 13, 2012, 03:26:26 PM »
How secure is it? Any hack attempts?

I've got a copy of windows server 2012 enterprise edition and thinking about using it to run a home server (one dedicated computer) mainly for file sharing, multimedia stuff, and maybe some other things in the future. Yeah, i know window server 2012 for home is overkill, but oh well... Need to get my feet wet with all its features in case i need it for a future job.

anyways, how reliable would this be? i don't want to  get a NAS or whatever you call it.. This would be for all my family members and friends to access from anywhere where internet is available.

get cloud storage, accomplish your file sharing and it's cheaper.

Put on a public IP and you'll get hack attempts from China, right away.  So put it behind a firewall for safe keeping okay.

would a software firewall be good enough?? These chinese hackers must do ip scans all day or something..

Will look into cloud storage..

I am assuming you are using your home isp; most people get hack because they just choose a very simplistic password/ no password/default password/default settings etc.  As far as port scanning goes, you might get scanned but you won't notice it since it won't bypass your isp router.  No worries man, I ran it here and there with no issues; just choose a strong password and you will be safe.

Maybe you can just put two nics into a cheap pc and download a free linux based firewall on it, then put the Server on the inside network.

Why not just buy a network drive and use it to share files?

you wouldnt get hacked.. just make a NAS .. you are basically describing a NAS so i don't get why you dont make a NAS.. lol .. there's no point for server 2012 if you arent really doing active directory or hosting a service.. if youre just file sharing on your home network i dont think you need 2012 unless u want to really deny people some certain permissions.. but hey, it wont hurt, itd be fun, set it up ..

k..will like i said, since i got a copy of win server 2012, i decided to use it. i'm a noob with it, so i guess it wouldn't hurt to experience it.  ;D Might become useful in the future for a job or something.  Got it up and running. Currently using a domain name with active directory.

Never used a NAS before, so not sure about the permission settings. With win server, it seems i can control pretty much anything which is pretty cool esp. when friends other than my family members will also be accessing the files/media stuff on this server too.

got it running on an old socket 939 Opteron dual core 1.8 ghz (gonna OC it to 2.8ghz) , 2.5G Ram.

I can attached a hard drive to my router and use it as a network drive, but i'm not sure how well it will handle multiple users accessing the files at the same time. I'd imagine that would be super slow.  No permission settings with a network drive.

How are you doing with your server 2012?  I've been running active directory, exchange 2010 and a fileserver for about 4 years now and it has been running quite nicely. The only problem is the dynamic IP, gotta change every 4-6 months. Anyhow, I've been thinking about using server 2012, but hesitate to do so due to the different GUI.
