College folks... Question for you.
« on: January 13, 2015, 09:36:43 PM »
If you're going to college [or not], see if you can answer this...

Pretend you're a professor or instructor and you're teaching a first year class.  You have several students who came to class on the first and second days, but then stopped coming.  They haven't turned in any assignments either.  They didn't drop out of your class.

Question is:
1.  Why do you think they'd do this?
2.  Do you think there's any way you can motivate them to come to class?  Perhaps call them and ask?  What would you ask?

Your grading scale may have some influence.

If you have a curve:  The students may be trying to manipulate it by trying less, enforcing a large curve for an easier grade.

If you put a large grade impact on mostly your exams (ex. exam 1 = 33%, exam 2 = 33%, quiz = 14%, assignments = 20%):  I can pass your class with at best a B- without ever turning in an assignment and showing up only do your quiz and exams.

If you want to motivate your students, ask them at the beginning and end of each semester.  Have them write down on paper what they think of the class, what they want/wanted to learn, what they thought was great and wasn't so great.  Foster an environment worth coming to class to learn.

they could be having a personal problem and decided to drop out without officially dropping out.  it could be video game addiction, mental illness, or relationship problem.  i suggest the instructor email the student.  some students are ashame to tell you their problems.

Some people apply for jr College.  Then they don't bother to go to class or put any effort into it.  Why do people waste their time like that?   Mental issues?

Get the unit to collect financial aid money.

There were a few classes that I only showed up on 3 occasions.

First day roll call
Quizzes
Exams

Instructor don't care.  They still get payed.

Lucky for me, I got tips lead from previous students to who classes to take.  Now if u pH all day n flunking a class, that's a problem.

Yeap, when I was going to school...

Some people would just do it for the money...

It was something like theyd get financial aid...

But they knew that if they disenrolled within a certain time frame theyd get 75 percent refund.

The systen was set up like...

Well it was set up so you couldnt take the the finacial aid out right, you had to go to school to get it...

So people did the loophole thing to get at least 75 percent back.  Once you got the refund you could use it however...

Man..i saw alot of students do that...and some wasnt even real students...  they just did it for the money...in a way its like fraud.

I went through all 15k posts and those 2 quotes I found were the only ones so I guess that would make it "everytime".  Feel free to go through all 15k posts and verify by quoting them all.  You need to quote them all to verifying prove "everytime".   Please verify that Im wrong.
