Driving car with no oil
« on: December 13, 2015, 03:03:21 PM »
I didn't check the oil level and keep driving my car.  The oil pressure light didn't come off but when I was less than 20 miles from home, the engine light went on and the cruise light linked.  When I got home, I checked the oil level and it was empty.  I did notice that the car didn't accelerate as quickly as it used when speeding over 40 mph.  I'm afraid my engine has been damaged.  I pour four qt of oil into the car but the acceleration still feels sluggish.

Time for a new car?

Depends on you...

If it's a problem and cost a lot later on, then it is time for a differnet car.

Most people would have their cars checked out first then determine if it's worth to get it fix or just trade it in for a new one but if you already know, it's better to go a "different car" route...

Weight the cost of a new motor with labor vs a newer car.

That's what I'd do.

I went through all 15k posts and those 2 quotes I found were the only ones so I guess that would make it "everytime".  Feel free to go through all 15k posts and verify by quoting them all.  You need to quote them all to verifying prove "everytime".   Please verify that Im wrong.

Here is an idea. Maybe, just maybe your car is still in limp mode. Unplug the battery for 15mins and see if the car can relearn air fuel mix again.

Otherwise, if that doesn't work check engine pressure.

Oil starvation is the best way to destroy your engine.
Things that go toast with oil starvation:
- Rings
- Skirts
- Pistons
- Rods
- Bearings
- The block itself
- the valve train
- etc
As stated weigh the costs for a new engine or putting that towards a new car.  No offense but $$$ mistake to learn.  I'm glad you at least admit it because you care.  Just don't do it again.  My buddies wife's car was starved from oil.  Her car just locked on the highway.  Expensive lesson for him...

Now it is showing serious symptoms.  It's shaking like it's going to die when accelerating.  Something is damaged in the engine.

Yeah.  I wouldn't drive it anymore.  Your engine will need to be inspected.  You could drain and check the oil and check for metal shavings.  Sounds like its gone though.

I had a '00 celica a while back with 200k miles. The engine always consumed oil so I had to remember to keep topping it off once a month. My mother ended up borrowing the car and i forgot to let her know to check the oil and keep it topped up. Long story short... It ended up with rod knock due to oil starvation.

Engine is toast.

anyway, if it was burning tons of oil to the point you need to put a quart in every time you fill up...  it was time for a new car at that point...  you're not in HS driving grandma's hand me down Buick LeSabre anymore.
