Gaomiao Culture and Chinese Characters
« on: December 10, 2016, 07:43:16 PM »
I recently found out about an archeological site called "高庙文化" ("Gaomiao Culture").  It's located in Hunan province, near the city of Hongjiang (洪江市) and is associated with the surrounding ancient cultures, which have ties to hmong/miao people:  http://baike.baidu.com/view/2506365.htm

It's interesting for its religious finds and its pottery.  Scholars think it was a regional religious center and that it may contain the earliest evidence of logographs (characters for words).  The site has been dated to about 7,000-7,500 years old.  Here's what one scholar writes about it:  http://www.wenku1.com/news/495AE594C1AD70A6.html

He notes that there are symbols similar to other logographs and points out that the “⊙” symbols are exactly the same as the ones on the oracle bones to denote "day" or "sun".

It's interesting that ancient logographs are consistently found in relation to religion.  So the genesis of chinese characters likely disseminated by hmong/miao ancestors through their religious practices?
