Christians weren't persecuted nor were they outcasts. However, historical Christians did use that idea for political gain. Muhammad is also an example of religion being used for power and control. Muhammad also had few religious followers at the beginning. Because him being a military leader in that region using military power to spread his religion was a preferred choice. Using military power against the Roman Empire wouldn't have been an ideal choice, that's why jesus chose patience by slowly gaining power through converting selected political leaders. Moses had many people following him, that's he made the same choice as Muhammad, using military power.

Jesus never had any political power nor popular influence, hence why He was crucified.
