got an old hmong lady last week
who went to visit her relatives and saw them watching hmong tv
(we in wisconsin no hmong tv here)

are you tracking the index (like the s&p 500)?
we don't buy individual stock (really risky, short term only)
we buy the whole stock market (index), because it tend to trend upward in the long run
you own all the stock

also pay attention to the fee and expense ration
that will eat up your gain in the long run

Right after Trump got elected, the stock market have been going up and up.  People who have 401k should see substantial gains.  I track the stock market and saw that my 401k went up $10k-15k+ on good months and $2500-$5k on slower months.  The indexes were at an all time high but it's leveling off right now.  I believe the market is correcting itself now.  It's still good to put your money in technology (Nasdaq).
