Any scary Hmong legends?
« on: May 28, 2018, 10:39:43 AM »
Do any one of you guys know any scary Hmong legends or tales? I'm trying to write a short story based on creepy Hmong legends and I can't seem to think of one. Of course, I'm not going to rewrite the original legend. I'm just trying to write something entirely new and bring in my own twist of the legend/tale.

This seems to be the best place to ask since this is a Hmong forum. So if you guys have any that you know of, drop them below.

Most of what I've heard are folk tales but very few are scary. Most of them explain the origin of the world and of men, and some are moral stories while others are just about ordinary people meeting extraordinary people.

Sometimes you hear stories about supernatural beings like poj ntxoog, but they don't seem like folk tales, rather they sound more like rumors and campfire stories. Folk tales, when adding a scary element, seem to feature realistic creatures like tigers.

There's actually a book about hmong stories and myths that you can find here: https://www.hmongabc.com/products/myths-legends-folk-tales-from-the-hmong-of-laos-dab-neeg-hmoob

Hope this helps! I can try to retell the dab neeg that I remember if you want to hear, but they're not scary.
