Decorated World War II veteran to speak in Alameda, while beacon will be lit on Mount DiabloALAMEDA — A talk by a veteran who served in a famed Japanese-American combat unit and the lighting of a beacon on Mount Diablo will mark the 77th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The Japanese strike at the U.S. Navy base in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941, killed 2,400 Americans and plunged the United States into World War II.
Among those whose life was forever changed by the Sunday morning raid was Lawson Sakai, a Japanese-American who served in the U.S. Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team.
During the war, Sakai, a Morgan Hill resident, took part in campaigns in Italy and France, was wounded four times, received a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantryman Badge.
