The Hmong Way: Long Funerals
« on: June 26, 2019, 05:10:43 PM »
PHers,
1) What are your thoughts on the length of time it takes to complete a Hmong funeral?
2) What are your thoughts on the other aspects (the rituals, paper money, sacrificing animals, ua hauv qhua, hais xim, etc) of Hmong funerals?

3. Do you still like the traditional 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day funeral?  Why or why not?

My thoughts are:
The traditional 1-day, 2-day, or 3-day funerals are way too time-consuming and costly.  I think everyone should just get cremated when they die.  Cremation is much more economical and environmentall y friendly.  You won't be taking up land anywhere and you'll be cutting down the funeral costs by 90%.  Wouldn't it be much better that your family/kids spend the $15,000-$40,000 they would have otherwise spent on a traditional funeral on a nice vacation for themselves, on a down payment on a nice house, or on other more important things?  Why would you want to burden your love ones with a huge funeral bill and burden them with the stress of planning a long funeral?  Also, how important really, are the other aspects of a Hmong funeral (the rituals, paper money, sacrificing animals, ua hauv qhua, hais xim, etc)?

All I know is that last time I was at a funeral and asked a lot of questions and they hated me for it.

Hmong people that still practice the traditional funeral need those long days to complete the entire funeral rituals, i'm thinking.  For Christian funeral, a funeral can last a few hours to a few days w/ exception of keeping the funeral open for 24 hours.

1) way too long and too costly
2) I’m okay with the rituals and paper money, etc. I don’t support sacrificing animals.

One day is fine. Anything after that is just too long.

That's what I think it's best but the older generation prefers the 6' under idea and the traditional funeral. I think it's time consuming, expensive, unsustainable, but this is something that everyone does it. Funeral homes benefit much from this same goes for the poultry industry. 3 days for elderly people is still much better than 7 days or longer. I think this is something that may never change or goes away as the RESPECT & HONOR value is a big factor so deeply rooted in our people. If attitudes change, then it can be shortened. The lives stock slaughter thing, I believe it's all for show only. If we love our love ones, we should love them when they're still alive. Not when they'd come to passed. 2 cows should be enough... When up to 8? That is excessive...

He say from Wisconsin to laos is 30+ hours
Than another 3-4 hours drive to your village by cars
