Not sure why some use a "sledge hammer" as I don't even use a small hammer. When I changed the tie rods on my Taco recently, I just borrow a tie rod puller from the autoparts store. And if you need to buy one, it cost about the same an average hammer at around 15 bucks...Here's a photo I took of the one I borrowed:

yup, i usually use a fork, or tie rod puller too...but couldn't find mines, so i knew someone show me a trick once, i forgot exactly and look up youtube and found the clip above...haha yup, it's okay to use a small/medium size regular or sledge hammer, just don't use a big ass axe like sledge hammer and striking the hell out of the thing. lols
