I do y'all Hmong really well. It just that when y'all have to sit closer to the stage because the microphone feed was cut off.

Not quite. Just the language seems similar. Both Chinese and Hmong have similar tonal sounds but different meanings.

E.g.
Chinese: Zhong Guo (tribal province)
Hmong: Zoo quav (poop really good)

Chinese: Yong Yi (swimsuit)
Hmong: Yooj yim (simple)

Here's the correct Mandarin: Wǒ bù zhīdào (actual pronounication = waa boo she saw)

FYI, the vowels and consonants in Mandarin are pretty much different the vowels & consonants in Hmong especially the placement in the words.

Mandarin didn't become modernized. I don't know where you get that information from. 
It stayed traditional 4ever because the Chinese are communists and conservatives and they like to stay that way. Same way the Republicans were conservatives and they want their language to be Americanized English instead of British English.
