Shotgun, Rotweiler, drops them!  Don't really need the 12 gauge, probably better with a 20 gauge, smaller bullet, less kickback.

Rifle if legal, as it has longer range.  Not every hunting ground is legal for rifle.

Hand-gun, well if only you can get that close to your target.  Let alone a extended barrel on your hand gun.

im using some soft point 150 grain
my rifle is a 270

i have many guns...
sure you can kiill deer with a handgun, rim, shotgun and knife.... etc...
but hunting is hard
and we only have a short window here in wisconsin
NO TIME FOR TO PLAY GAMES

always rifle
avoid those 30.06 calibre... too powerful and recoil kick hard

223
270
243

recoil is more manageable
plus check your state law and rules

here in wisconsin we have to use a centerfire rifle

The two used most by hunters in the US are rifles and shotguns.

But there are many kinds of rifles and many kinds of shotguns. You choose one that suits you the most.

Most hunters prefer the 30-06 rifle. But others will also kill a deer, e.g. 308, 223, etc. Some are better for a younger hunter, etc.

Hmong hunters love the 12-gauge Browning shotgun.

The 20-gauge shotgun is smaller than the 12 gauge; it will kill a deer and is legal but it’s more for younger hunters.

i avoid the shotgun for deer
just stick to a scope rifle
you can get a starter rifle at your local sporting good for around $300-400
usually comes rifle+scope
ready to shoot out of the box..

i would avoid 30.06 cal
it is really powerful and recoil is strong

get like a 243, 223
etc...

In Minnesota, rifles can be used only in the north zones. You can't use rifles for deer in the south zones of the state.

But the shotgun can go all over the state.

That may change soon. But it's still the law that rifles are allowed only in the north.

There are lots of bigger trophy bucks in the south zones in Minnesota. It's nice to have a shotgun.

In Minnesota, slug and rifle seasons start at the same time. If you wait till slug season is over, you might still do muzzle loaders instead.

Oh

Hunting is already hard as is

Sometimes deer don’t even come
When they come
I don’t want to miss
I NEED MEAT!!!

Shotguns or not, missing a deer is not the fault of the gun but of the hunter. Practice, practice, and practice!
