Russia’s War Plan Is Rocked by Ukraine’s Rapid Gains
Moscow now faces the problem of explaining its setbacks to the Russian people

Ukraine’s rout of Russian forces from some of their hardest-won positions over the weekend has upended Moscow’s military goals, undermining its carefully tailored narrative and leaving Russian President Vladimir Putin to deal with the questions of who is at fault and what to do about it.

Throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has stood firmly by its line that the operation was unfolding according to plan, despite setbacks and failures. Moscow’s propagandists have used their platforms on state television to argue that Mr. Putin’s military objectives—to topple Kyiv’s pro-Western government and pull Ukraine back under Russia’s influence—are still on track.

Russian units lose half of their soldiers during withdrawal from Kharkiv Oblast General Staff report

SUNDAY, 18 SEPTEMBER 2022, 07:01

Units of the 11th Army Corps of the Baltic Sea Fleet of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation have lost over 50% of their military personnel and more than 200 pieces of equipment in the course of withdrawal from Kharkiv Oblast [as a result of Ukraine’s counteroffensi ve].

Source: General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook, information as of 06:00 on 18 September

Details: In addition, the 64th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade of the Eastern Military District of the Russian Armed Forces lost over 90% of its military personnel, who were killed, wounded, deserted or fired as a result of refusing to take part in hostilities. The Brigade’s equipment is being transferred to border security units of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation in preparation to disbanding the unit.

The General Staff notes that Russian occupying forces are suffering significant losses following their attempts to assault the Ukrainian defence forces [collective name for all Ukrainian military formations involved in the ongoing combat in this country - ed.] on the Avdiivka front. According to the available information, over 30 military personnel of the 1st Army Corps of the Russian Armed Forces end up in hospitals daily. The occupiers are doing everything they can to restore combat capability of the units that have sustained losses.

Russian forces carried out six missile strikes, 28 airstrikes and 90 MLRS attacks on military and civilian targets across the territory of Ukraine over the course of 17 September, damaging infrastructure in more than 30 cities, towns and villages, including Kharkiv, Dvorichna, Kamianka, Krasnohorivka, Novomykhailivk a, Neskuchne, Uspenivka, Myroliubivka, Biliaivka, Vysokopillia and Mykolaiv.

In addition, the Russians hit civilian targets on the outskirts of Zaporizhzhia, and in Chuhuiv and Kramatorsk. There are civilian casualties.

In Ukraine's retaken battlefields, soldiers recover bodies

This region of rolling fields and woodland near the Russian border was the site of fierce battles for months during the summer. Only now, after Ukrainian forces retook the area and pushed Russian troops back across the border in a blistering counteroffensi ve, has the retrieval of bodies scattered across the battlefield been possible.

This member of the "ant" side seems to put a civil and generous offer out there for members of the "foot" side  ???:

Quote
Zelenskyy makes three promises to Russian soldiers who surrender

Quote: "Ukraine guarantees every Russian soldier who surrenders three things:

1. you will be treated in a civilised manner, in accordance with all conventions;

2. no one will know the circumstances of your surrender, no one in Russia will know that your surrender was voluntary;

3. if you are afraid to return to Russia and do not want an exchange, we will find a way to ensure this as well."

Kissinger: In a way, Russia's already lost the war
Fri, September 30, 2022 at 11:17 AM

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger says that "Russia has, in a way, already lost the war" in Ukraine. He says Russia's invasion has shown its "capacity to threaten Europe with conventional attack has now been demonstrably overcome." (Sept. 30)

Putin Suffers Most Humiliating Ukraine Defeat Yet

Moscow celebrated the annexation of huge swathes of Eastern Ukraine Friday but President Vladimir Putin’s party was wrecked by a lightning counter-attack that may have trapped thousands of his men in a key city supposedly now part of Russia.

“This is the will of millions of people,” Putin said at a glitzy ceremony in front of high-ranking Russian diplomats still in the country. “People living in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson region and Zaporizhzhia region are becoming our compatriots forever.”

But as he gloated, Ukrainian sources claimed that the strategic city of Lyman, which has served as a Russian military hub in Donetsk, has been encircled and supply lines cut. “Lyman! The operation to encircle the Russian group is at the stage of completion,” said Ukrainian lawmaker Oleksiy Goncharenko on Friday. The claim could not be independently verified but, if confirmed, it would be one of the most serious Russian military losses of the war so far.

Pro-Kremlin forces have conceded that the Ukrainians have made major gains in the region and are close to cutting off the Russian staging post in northern Donetsk, which has been under Russian control since July. An adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky tweeted that Russian forces would have to “ask for an exit from Lyman” if they want to surrender, adding, “Only if, of course, those in the Kremlin are concerned for their soldiers.”

Top Diplomat Warns Russian ‘Army of Trojan Horsemen’ Hides Among Us

Ukraine said earlier in the week they had made deep gains in the stronghold region and were close to taking back the territory—despite Putin’s claims that the region now belonged to an enlarged Russia.

Speaking after Putin’s formally announced that four enclaves partially controlled by Russia would be subsumed into the country against all international law, Zelensky vowed to win them back.

“The entire territory of our country will be liberated from this enemy—the enemy not only of Ukraine, but also of life itself, humanity, law and truth,” he said.

Russia withdraws troops after Ukraine encircles key city

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — After being encircled by Ukrainian forces, Russia pulled troops out Saturday from an eastern Ukrainian city that it had been using as a front-line hub. It was the latest victory for the Ukrainian counteroffensi ve that has humiliated and angered the Kremlin.

Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman complicates its internationall y vilified declaration just a day earlier that it had annexed four regions of Ukraine — an area that includes Lyman. Taking the city paves the way for Ukrainian troops to potentially push further into land that Moscow now illegally claims as its own.

“The Ukrainian flag is already in Lyman, Donetsk region. Fighting is still going on there. But there is no trace of any pseudo-referendum there,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address Saturday.

Team Putin Wakes Up: We Never Should’ve Laughed at Ukraine

Russia experienced a number of embarrassing setbacks on the battlefield in Ukraine, but none of them were as humiliating as an explosion that rocked the Crimean Bridge, also known as Kerch Strait Bridge or Kerch Bridge, early Saturday morning.

During his Saturday broadcast on Solovyov Live, Russian state TV host Sergey Mardan opened his show with heavy sighs. He noted, “All day long we’ll be talking about how this happened and what will come of it. I can tell you right now that nothing good will come of it, that’s for sure.” Mardan grimly concluded: “They’ve achieved an enormous propagandistic effect.”

Repeatedly referring to Ukrainians with an often-used slur, Mardan complained that Russia apparently underestimated not only them, but also the Americans. Chauvinistic disregard for the Ukrainians as Russia’s “lesser” opponents manifests in the way Russian propagandists tend to blame the West for any painful blows inflicted in the course of Russia’s ill-fated invasion.
