Not that much different from the actual funeral. It is meant to bring the spirit back for a visit before it goes on its way.

Think of what "tso" and "plig" mean and you've got it. You release the spirit so it can go away...and reincarnate.

The ceremony is held after the bodily burial, not before ever.  Some times three months or so but not a whole year after, either.  If people can't find the dead (e.g. a lost soldier), and they have dreams or reasons to believe that the person has died, then years later they may still do the ceremony. But for those clearly dead and got buried, usually a few months after the bodily burial.

For the details of the chants, etc., you might want to consult a funeral qeej player or some other funeral experts.

inviting the soul to visit home and family for one last day before they are released to go wherever they have to go after the 13th day they were buried..releas ing the soul to be free..almost the same thing during the funeral but this time , using hmong clothes as a doll, the big bamboo round table, big round bamboo pan, rice patties, txiv qeej txiv nruas, txiv nkauj if you have them..a propane as a fire pit or place, a gate representing as crossing to the other world....

I see. I'll have to ask my dad about this. He used to be a txiv qeej for many funerals when he was younger. Thanks.

I'm going to record my dad's tsoplig this coming weekend...the whole thing...

Tsoplig is one thing I missed in my life after attending so so so many funerals, so this will also be new to me again.

My dad's tso plig will probably take about 10 hours...beginn ing to end..
