Saw a big snapper turtle on my street just as I pulled out of the driveway.

The Karens would not have let it slip by.
I don't like snapping turtles. One time I caught a huge sunny and put it on my chain, hanging down from a dock. I turned to fishing. Then when the chain started beating against the dock pole, I saw a snapping turtle already holding tight onto my sunfish. I could get only half of the fish back.

It is a really strange year this year seeing so many snapping turtles. A lot of them were on streets or highways. I've seen many trying to cross the highway only to get run over. Some are smashed with bloody mess, others just flipped upsidedown.
Even saw a few typical painter turtles, crossing the streets. Stopped by and let the kids looked at it.

I saw one being all torn into pieces in northeastern Minnesota. Then another one tried to cross highway 96 but was not crawling on its belly; it was standing on it four legs and looking left and right just like a sprinter was going to do! lol
They are edible. I had some snapping turtle soup years ago in PA. Pretty good. I think we can get two per day without being in trouble here. I might connect with some Karen friends and get some for them to cook for us.

Do you live near a marshy area or pond?
-
Me nope...that is why its so weird to see these turtles out so far away from swampy areas. You'd expect frogs croaking nearby, but only dry land crickets.

It appears to me that turtles sense lakes and rivers from afar. Whenever they cross a road or are heading somewhere, if you look beyond or check beyond, you'll find a body of water somewhere in that direction.

Went running a few weeks back I saw a turtle trying to go up the hill towards the hwy :o suicidal thoughts?
Did you know that turtles can breathe out of their butts. :2funny: I found that hilarious

Another snappying turtle lost it's snapping powers yesterday on highway 36 near Stillwater. It was torn into pieces as cars and cars kept running over it on the lane.

Dang, saw a big shell right off of Highway 36 and 61. Poor animal really got lost. It was just off the curvy ramp too.

Looking back at these posts, seems like the month of July is when these turtles like to migrate or something.
