Is This Skydiving Center the Deadliest in the US?

The Parachute Center in Lodi, California, has reportedly been linked to 28 deaths since 1985. It's leaving many to wonder why the Parachute Center is still allowed to send people jumping out of planes.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Chickens Out On Moving Against Mike Johnson

WASHINGTON — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said last week that she would force the House of Representative s to hold a referendum on whether to oust Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) this week, but so far she’s not doing it.

Greene emerged from a meeting with Johnson on Tuesday saying that “the ball is in Mike Johnson’s court” to act on a set of “suggestions” for running the House that she and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) presented to the speaker.

Asked about the timeline for Johnson to respond, Greene wouldn’t be specific.

“That’s up to Mike Johnson, and it can’t drag out,” she said. “These are things that have to be done.”

The suggestions — Greene and Massie have insisted that they aren’t demands — include only allowing votes on bills with support from a majority of Republicans, not providing further funding for Ukraine, and defunding the special counsel prosecuting former President Donald Trump.

Only two Republicans have said that they would support Greene’s move against Johnson, while Democrats have said that they would vote to bail out Johnson, meaning her resolution would certainly fail. But she said she would do it anyway to show that Johnson was effectively a Democrat.

It’s not clear if Greene wants a handshake from Johnson, some sort of written pledge, or what.

“Obviously, you can’t make things happen instantly, and we all are aware and understanding of that,” Greene said. “So now the ball is in his court and he’s supposed to be reaching out to us, hopefully soon.”

Johnson, for his part, said Tuesday that his talks with Greene and Massie are “not a negotiation,” and that he has similar meetings with members from all over the Republican conference.

And Johnson said the idea of reining in special counsels is something that Republicans have wanted to do for a while, before Greene and Massie made their suggestion.

“There’s discussion this week, as there has been for a long, long time, about what is the most effective way for Congress to take the reins of that and ensure that the special counsels are not abusing the law themselves,” Johnson said.

In other words, Johnson, who has previously said that Greene’s ouster threat is bad for the Republican party and the country, has offered no concession to Greene except for meeting with her in his office.

The problem is, Republicans have very few bargaining chips with which to try to force Democrats to agree to any of Greene’s demands, unlike earlier in the year when the government needed funding. The last must-pass bill before fall is for reauthorizing federal aviation programs. That legislation could wind up being targeted, though, to carry any concessions Johnson may agree to, and it was reportedly discussed by Johnson and Greene at Tuesday’s meeting.

While Greene warned Johnson against dragging the dispute out, she started the fight back on March 22, when she filed the initial motion to toss him from the speaker’s chair. Then she described it as a warning shot to get Johnson to fight harder against Democrats, and she has publicly warned several times since then that she would ask for a vote. She particularly warned Johnson against allowing a vote on aid to Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion, but he did it anyway.

Greene and many other Republicans who are angry but do not support her move are upset over Johnson allowing floor votes on an annual spending deal, government authority to spy on foreigners abroad and a $61 billion Ukraine aid package, as well as his tacit acceptance of Democratic help to stay in power.

Asked why she said last week that she would force the vote on her “motion to vacate” this week but isn’t doing so, Greene said that she’s just being patient.

“What I’m trying to do is give Mike Johnson a chance to be a Republican speaker, and he seems willing to try to do that again,” she said.

Who will be dumb enough to become Donald Trump's vice president?

One of the biggest questions swirling around Donald Trump’s reelection campaign – aside from “Will he or won’t he be a convicted felon?” and “Are we really doing this again, people?” – is a tricky one: Who will be the former president and current criminal defendant’s vice presidential candidate?

That anyone would consider applying for the job is remarkable. It’s like asking for volunteers to report for sticking-your-finger-in-a-light-socket duty. The position of Trump’s vice president brings with it the kind of job safety only found among nervous snake handlers and crash-test dummies.

And yet, people are actually vying for the gig. A pack of them descended on South Florida this weekend to debase themselves before a twice-impeached former one-term president who demands absolute loyalty while dispensing none.

A parade of hapless souls are actually hoping to be Trump's VP pick
Among the reported contenders are billionaire North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, New York Rep. Elise Stefanik, former GOP presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – who once called Trump a “con artist” and said that “he has spent his entire career sticking it to the little guy” – was there as well, presumably traveling in his hermetically sealed Bubble of Hypocrisy.

At least six contenders for the former president's running mate – Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.; Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio; Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.; Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y.; South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem and North Dakota Gov. Doug Bergum – will attend a Republican donor retreat Friday and Saturday in Palm Beach, Florida, in what looks like a series of auditions.

Also in contention for the VP slot, I assume, is a full-length mirror that tells Trump how handsome he is every time he gazes into it and a golden box that emits a recorded message – “You’re absolutely right, sir!” – whenever a button on top of it is pressed.

Who will be Trump's VP? Please let Donald Trump pick Katie Britt as his vice president. It'd be a hoot.

But wait. Where's Mike Pence in all this VP talk?
Notably absent from the Cynical South Florida Keister Smooch Fest of 2024 was former actual Vice President Mike Pence, who had the audacity to not help Trump do a coup and is now persona non grata in the MAGA wing of the GOP. That a former president’s own vice president won’t even endorse his current presidential run is a staggering fact that’s often overlooked, probably because that former president is already drowning in dozens of indictments and keeps falling asleep during his first criminal trial.

But I digress.

Just trust Trump. When has he ever made a bad decision?
Whatever Trump took away from this weekend’s parade of potential victims, the timing of his decision is anybody’s guess.

Newt Gingrich, who swapped his spine for a MAGA hat some time ago, told USA TODAY: “I’m relaxing and watching to see what (Trump) does; he will only do it out of intuition.”

May 2, 2024: Former US President Donald Trump attends his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City. Trump, 77, is accused of falsifying business records to reimburse his lawyer, Michael Cohen, for a $130,000 hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels just days ahead of the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton.

Ah, yes. That famous Trump intuition. The one that led to repeated bankruptcies and business failures and a failed reelection bid and a small army of former Cabinet members whom he hired and now describes as a collection of ninnies and jerks.

Rather than posit which sucker Trump will wind up picking (although my money’s on the compliment-dispensing mirror), it seems easier to map out the requirements for the position of Trump’s vice presidential candidate.

Dog killing could cost Noem VP: Who knew Americans liked puppies?

7 requirements to be Trump's vice president
All candidates’ souls must have fully vacated their bodies, along with all dignity, morals and sense of self-worth.
The ability to always agree with Trump is essential. If Trump says “2+2 = 5,” the candidates must be willing to accept that as fact and order the imprisonment of any and all math teachers who disagree.
Logical consistency is not considered an asset, and the candidates must be ready and willing to loudly yell things that are transparently false and, often, make no sense whatsoever.
An ideal candidate must be comfortable with potentially being hanged by an angry mob.
Candidates who have not murdered dogs are preferred. (Sorry, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem.)
The candidates must be willing to listen to Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast and engage in at least one conversation per month with Eric Trump without laughing.
And finally, all candidates must be not only willing but excited to have every ounce of their decency and credibility vaporized in service to a man who wouldn’t spit on them if they were on fire.
Any of the morally pliable folks who pandered their way to South Florida this weekend have a chance at getting picked. But like I said, if we’re being honest, the full-length mirror is a clear front-runner.

Mom Accused of Throwing 6-Year-Old Son with Disabilities into Canal to Be Eaten by Crocodiles
The child's body was recovered the next day

Police in India have arrested a couple after recovering the partially-eaten body of their 6-year-old son whose mother is accused of throwing him into a canal known for having crocodiles, according to multiple reports.

Savitri Kumar and her husband Ravi Kumar were arrested on murder charges in connection with the incident, which took place on Saturday night in the Indian state of Karnataka, local police say, according to The Hindustan Times, Outlook India, and The Times of India.

The boy, identified as Vinod, had a hearing and speech impediment, per Outlook India, The Times of India and CNN’s India-affiliate News 18.

His partially-eaten body was recovered from the jaws of a crocodile the following day, police said, according to The Hindustan Times and News 18.

On Saturday evening, following an altercation where Ravi allegedly blamed his wife for having a child with disabilities, Savitri allegedly threw 6-year-old Vinod into a canal which connects to a river known for its crocodiles, per police, The Times of India and The Hindustan Times reported.

After neighbors alerted police, a brief search was carried out before it was halted for the night, the outlets reported.

The search resumed on Sunday morning, when police found Vinod’s body with several bite marks and a hand missing, police said, according to The Times of India and News 18.

Police allege Ravi had been harassing Savitri and demanding she "throw the child away" because of his disabilities, per The Times of India and WION News.

"My husband is responsible. He kept saying let [Vinod] die,” Savitri told reporters, according to Outlook India.
“If my husband keeps repeating such things, how much torture could my son endure? But he kept repeatedly telling me to let the child die," she said.

Trump and Republicans line up to praise frat boys as they wade into campus Gaza protests

For weeks, conservative circles have been describing the wave of protests against the Israel-Hamas war taking place across US college campuses as a disturbing aberration.

On Fox News, hosts claimed the student occupying campus quads were pro-Hamas and “entitled.”

On Newsmax, a spokesperson for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the protests “antisemitic,” “anti-American,” and “anti-Western overall.”

From outside Manhattan court, where’s he on trial for allegedly hiding hush money payments to bury affair allegations, Donald Trump blasted the demonstrations as a “disgrace.”

However, it seems these figures have coalesced around at least one kind of campus activist they can celebrate: fraternity brothers and counter-protesters seeking to push back against pro-Palestian students.

These counter-protesters have been portrayed as patriotic heroes defending campus from a Hamas beachhead. One Fox host suggested that “America’s frat boys” deserve the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

No one has leaned into this dynamic more than the Trump campaign.

The former president released a video on Friday mixing news footage of various protests from around the country with voiceovers from various conservative news personalities.

The ad starts out with a clip of fraternity brothers at the University of North Carolina who held up an American flag that was temporarily taken down and replaced with a Palestinian flag, along with commentary from Fox News host Jesse Waters, who can be heard saying, “Patriotic fraternity brothers stepped in and said, not today Hamas.”

— Sen. Ted Budd (@SenTedBuddNC) May 1, 2024

The campaign spot later shows part of an exchange between rival protesters at the University of Mississippi that took place on Thursday.

The video cuts out just before one of the counter-protesters was seen appearing to hoot like a monkey and make mocking gestures towards a Black woman filming the protests, echoing longstanding racist tropes.

Stacey Spiehler, a University of Mississippi student who filmed the exchange, described the counter-protesters as a hostile crowd that surrounded the woman in the video.

“Counter-protesters were throwing things. I saw half a chicken parm sandwich on the ground, a carrot,” Ms Spiehler told The Independent. “She was brave, holding her own and had more intelligence and empathy in her little finger than that whole crowd. Whether or not you agree with her, she embodies UM.”

The incident at the conservative university echoed its larger history of racial tensions. In 1962, students rioted and attacked US marshals tasked with protecting James Meredith, the first Black man to attend the university.

As one commentator noted in The Washington Post, the seemed rivalry being set up — frat bros versus liberal agitators — also has echoes elsewhere in 1960s protest history. Radical students protesting the Vietnam War in 1968 at Columbia University dubbed more-conservative counter-protesters “the jocks.”

The Trump campaign aren’t the only ones celebrating counter-protesters against the anti-Israel student movement.

— Governor Tate Reeves (@tatereeves) May 2, 2024

In a post Thursday on X, Mississippi governor Tate Reeves posted a video of counter-protesters drowning out pro-Palestinian activists by singing the national anthem, saying the scene, “Warms my heart.”

On a recent Fox News broadcast, Laura Ingraham interviewed one of the UNC students who held up the American flag, while dismissing pro-Palestinian activists as “make-believe warriors” and “dweebs who never really played a sport.”’

Meanwhile, a pair of political operatives with Republican ties created a GoFundMe in the name of the UNC students to fundraise for a “rager” of a party to celebrate them, which eventually raised $500,000.

Country singer John Rich, meanwhile, offered to perform a free concert “for the boys who protected the American flag at UNC.”

An 18-year-old Domino’s delivery driver was shot at multiple times after he parked in the wrong driveway while dropping off food at a home in Tennessee, police said.

Caiden Wheeler told officers he was delivering pizza to a home Monday on North Poole Street in Ashland City, about 25 miles northwest of Nashville.

"The victim stated that he thought he was parked in the right driveway but when he got out to deliver the pizza the next door neighbor ... flagged him down," a criminal complaint states.

Wheeler said he walked through the yard, delivered the pizza and got back into his truck.

As he was pulling out of the driveway, Wheeler said he heard gunshots and saw someone "running at him and shooting at him," according to the complaint.

He said he quickly backed out of the driveway and sped off. Police said there were three bullet holes in his truck: one on the driver’s side by the gas tank, one above the driver’s side window and another in the front driver’s side wheel and tire.

Here's the case that involved that Hmong father with several children:

STOCKTON - A Domino's Pizza delivery driver was shot and killed in the 300 block of South Sutter Street on Thursday night, moments after he delivered a late-night order.

The San Joaquin County Coroner's Office identified him as Mickey Xiong, 31, of Stockton.

Stockton police Detective Roseann Clark said the 11:15 p.m. delivery on South Sutter Street was routine, and the pizza was delivered and paid for.

As Xiong got back into his car, he was approached by two men, one of whom shot him in the torso. He attempted to drive away but crashed into a parking meter in the 100 block of South Sutter Street, police said. He was unresponsive when officers arrived.

Clark said Xiong's car had clear signs indicating he was from Domino's Pizza.

"We talked to the customer that made the transaction, and it doesn't seem to be sales-related. Based on what we found in the car, it doesn't appear to be a robbery," Clark said. "We don't know right now what the motive is."

Xiong worked at the Domino's Pizza franchise located at 402 E. Charter Way.

Franchise owner Craig Turner said he was asked by police not to speak about details. He did say other employees of the restaurant were shocked to hear of their co-worker's death.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of a team member," Turner said. "We just really want the police to find who did this. We're like a family down here. ... This is tough."
