General Discussion / Mutations
« on: December 22, 2019, 11:48:12 AM »
A Hmong fairy tale described how a Hmong lady gave birth to an elephant son.

She had been working hard under the tropical sun in the slash-and-burn rice field on the plateau of a bluff. Later that day, she became overly thirsty and was not anywhere near any stream or lake to have some water.

So, when the lady saw a puddle of elephant pee on the pebble trail, she drank it.

The lady became pregnant afterwards and eventually gave birth to a son who turned out to have elephant parts.

The fairy tale further described how the son overcame various challenges in his mission to find his true father and their reunification.

That tale might have been borrowed from Hindu tales, simply because India cherishes elephants more than Thailand does. The Hmong cherish elephants even less. A reunification of elephants and humans can only be dreamed of in India, not even Thailand or Laos.

Anything is possible in a fairy tale, even flying and disappearing live humans.

Now, this 2019 Xiengkhouang mutation might just be similar: a woman coming into contact with another being's reproductive items, such as a virus or some infection.

But this time it's not just a fairy tale; it is physically real.

General Discussion / Doua Moua is playing Chien Po in "Mulan"

This is Chien Po. But Doua Moua looks much better than the animated Chien Po. So does Liu Yifei than the drawn Mulan.

General Discussion / Communications have come a long way.

when I was a kid, my older relatives would take months or so before some letter or cassette recordings would be to Thailand and back.

Nowadays, just one click within even less than half a second and someone there gets the message.

General Discussion / Vegas
« on: November 28, 2019, 07:33:26 AM »
I had a brief stop in Vegas this week, because of my work.

Lots of Asians there.

The city has strong Fengshui that draws people there. I could feel that from the mountains enveloping the area. Goers don't seem to understand why they are there; they are just dragged there by the city's Fengshui.

The little girl says it's too scary for me and that I should not see it.

General Discussion / My dream dictates what I am doing today
« on: November 11, 2019, 02:46:28 PM »
Dream: About 3 a.m. this morning, I dreamed that I had gotten lost in Canada and was looking for ways to get back to the U.S.

I saw a White man by guest restroom building--like those at a rest area on the highways--but it was on the hillside.  I went to ask him if he knew how to get back to the U.S. He said "no." And he left the area.

Just when I was about to go up the hillside to the top to find a way back, a White lady stopped her car on the rest area's parking lot. I approached her. She seemed scared that I might rob her or something and was about to walk about. I spoke loud that I was lost and needed help. She started using her motions to point at things and to show me signs of things. I realized she was muted.

No help. So, I went up the hill on my own.

Just as I was on top of it, the lady and another lady came by and she began doing signs to me again. This time she had her cell phone with her showing a trail. She zoomed into the trail and pointed a finger into it. I took that to mean I should follow that trail. It was right on top of the hill, too.

I followed the trail and found the US again near Seattle.

Actuality/interpretation of the dream: This morning, without thinking what kind of day today was, I walked on our skyway to the Courthouse. Fifteen minutes and I got to the wing that would lead to the courthouse. But that access was locked. I was not sure why. But I saw lots of students walking there, and so I thought it was locked to prevent those students from jamming up the courthouse's walkways. I decided to go down the steps to the street level to get to the main door of the courthouse.

On the way down, there was a White guy sitting by the stairways near the exit door. I just looked at him and felt he wouldn't know how to get to the courthouse. I was using my instincts on the shortcut I was using. I passed him and went out the door onto the street.

I crossed the street to the courthouse door and realized it was locked. There was a sign that said access was not available and to call a number for help.

I now realized it was Vet Day!

I couldn't get back into the building for the skyway, and so I had to walk two blocks to a parking ramp that I knew had access on the second level to the skyway.

Went there in the cold. Got to an elevator that took me up to the second floor (top of the hill in the dream).

Just around the elevator door was an access to the skyway (the trail the lady was pointing at).

General Discussion / My work got me to meet people from old times
« on: November 06, 2019, 12:32:21 PM »
About 15 years ago, I was a mobile interpreter. I had been assigned to go to people's houses to interpret during nurse visits and so forth. A Hmong family I was interpreting for asked about my backgrounds--who my parents were and where we came from in Laos.

He then told me his family used to live just down the hill from our thatch.

That was 30 years or so ago.

Yesterday, a client came to my office. I had never met her before. But she said she knew my parents and my maternal grandparents very well. Her family used to live in that same village I grew up in. As she described where her family's house was, I remembered playing marbles with her brothers in their front yard.

I expect the next client to tell me she and I used to know each other from the life before this one.

General Discussion / A lady brought me lunch, real spicy
« on: October 31, 2019, 04:27:17 PM »
She said she made it spicy because she wanted to make sure I didn't share it with my female colleagues (who aren't Hmong).

The meat broth is as spicy as a papaya salad with five red chili peppers in it.
