Title: This is what my grass looks like...a wheat field wannabe
Post by: Calypso on May 23, 2012, 09:04:01 AM
I know, it's getting really long. Gotta mow it soon. But what I wanted to show u guys is those little tufts on the ends of the blades, like little seedlings. I swear, out of my whole block (heck, probably the whole neighborhood), my grass is the only one that does this.. at least to this extent. It does this even when we cut it sooner and don't let it grow so long. It is soooo weird looking alongside all the other beautifully, uniform green grass in my neighbors' yards. :2funny:

So anyway, my question: Can grass actually seed itself like this, or do I just have crappy grass? Thank u.

If it's grass and I buy chemicals to kill it, then will I have to replant new grass?

The grass looks very tall in that pic but it's really not that tall. It's like 3.5 inches high. We usually cut it down to 2.5 inches.

there are lots of grass types out there. you can go ask someone (at a local garden store) to help you figure out which grass type you have and then look into how to maintain it.

That's true. I don't know what grass type this is. We'll have to go find out. The funny thing is that this only happens to the front yard. The backyard is fine.

I fert. my grass over the weekend so give it 1 week to see if it is alive or completely dead.  Might have to go with fake grass for the backyard after seeing sample of it at Lowes.

Calypso, ours is similar.  Ours was never like this until this year.  We can play hide n seek in our front lawn, that's how bad it is.   :2funny: :2funny:

We just mowed it and will try some weed killer to see if it comes back, but I'm certain they are not weed, but grass so will see what happens.

I'm embarassed at my lawn at the moment.   :-[ :-[

Really... so I'm not the only one. Whew! ;D

Let me know how it goes w/ the weed killer.

I didn't really get to touch it to really see how it feel because I just walk by it quickly and head out because of my husband....... ....he's not one to spend any extra time looking around and just get in and out of the store......... I'll go check it out this weekend because there was actually a few sample of those fake grass.  I think I wouldn't mind it for a few years since I still have little one that need to run and play in the backyard.

Calypso, I will let you know how the weed killer works.  My husband does yardwork on a weekly basis, and we are puzzled as to why our front lawn has become a prairie! If this fails, we'll have to either pay a gardener to come do something about it or get new sod all together.  Money I don't have or want to spend!  :D :D :D

Summerberry,  fake grass as in astroturf or is this something different?

Sukie, yes, please keep me updated on ur situation. Thank u. O0

When I quickly touch a little of it just walking pass it.......it feel like fake grass that is used for easter egg hunt but just imagine it very thick together as a patch.  There was a few together as a sample.

I took a picture of our grass last night to compare it a week ago when we start the fertiziler.  I probably did a poor job of walking up and down the grass to make it evenly when using the machine to spread it out.  I had to return the Scott thing back to Lowes because it was not worth it after I finished using it.  They recommend you fert. 4x a year so I told myself who care.......I'm returning it for my $40 back because it terrible and especially the hand roll one. I can tell it help a little but my back yard is still too hot on most day so we'll see what happen later.

A week when we fertizlier the grass.

Yesterday recent photo to see how much it has change........ ..

Going to give it 2-3 more week and then decide if grass is for us or not..... might have to consider getting those Mex. to come cut and help with the grass.  My front yard I didn't take picture but it look like it has grew a little too.

I don't water it only my husband but it only been a week so you can't really tell but you can clearly see the sprout are growing out over the grass turf but the backyard is hard place to maintain because no shade and can be dead or dried out fast while the front yard has change a lot and much greener.  I regret we took out 3 of the trees that was along or close to the brick wall when we did the concrete work.  I told my husband we can always plant but at the same time with little kids the grass will be dead sooner or later again........

SummerBerry, our front yard has no trees at all. I was told by our neighbors that there used to be plenty of trees there but that the previous owners took them all out due to some problems with the roots or something like that. It's nice to have some trees for shade. I wish we had at least one tree there.

In our backyard, we have a big tree right in the middle and the branches r always falling down during storms. But so far, no really huge branch has yet to fall on our house. Fingers crossed.

Whoa, that's a ginormous tree! Its branches must weigh a ton. That one I'd agree would have to be cut down if it was close to the house.

My neighbor has a tree that leans into our yard and right over our pool. Damn leaves and twigs r always falling into our pool. I've been hinting at them that they should cut those branches off. They did but still left some. ::) But I guess if they chopped them all off, they'd have a lopsided looking tree. ;D

My grass today......... .. My son threw my camera in the toilet so it is dead and had to use an old camera and haven't adjust it yet so it look dark.  Grass texture is different maybe because of the brand we use to fertizlier it but it was not easy to get it even out when pouring it.  I don't like it and going to let it go for another 2 weeks before cutting it.  The front yard has change a lot too.

It's nice to have some trees for shade. I wish we had at least one tree there.

I regret we took out some of the trees in the front and back yard because of the concrete work.  There was actually 3 trees in the backyard close to the brick wall when the owner/investor fixed the yard and got the grass turf and everything.  Right now I look at the trees in the front yard and see how much it has blossom and perfect shade too.  My next door neighbor the Chinese are lazy and never clean their yard unless his parent are visiting from China every 2-3 months then his dad will do a little of this and that and if we suggest anything then him and my husband will fixed it together like the fence.

I think the fertizlier I got for the grass actually grew thick and the color texture is a very dark green kind so now I realized there is all kind of grass.  That machine didn't do any help in evenly it out so once I'm back from vacation I will get another bag and spread it out with my hand on the bald spot.
here's one of my grassy backyards.

My 1st time seeing such little hailstorm almost like snow here otherwise you have to drive out to the mountain.  Too bad none of my kids were here to see it because I just send them off a day before so they all missed it otherwise they would probably be in the back touching it.

This small city here they don't do much about city regulations/codes or maybe I haven't been in that situation yet but so far I barely see such thing like city street sweeping on schedule day for your street or else ticket if car is not remove.  I don't think we even have parking meter where you put coin in downtown area but more like 2 hour free parking in the space.  Only time they take matter into their own hands is when someone or the whole neighborhood come together to tried to evict or get someone out because they don't want to tolerated anymore with what is going on.

Example....... my house.......1s t owner were a Mexican family that raised chicken (not sure if cock fighting one) and also has a field of corn planted in the backyard so the neighbors here didn't like it and somehow the owner let go of their house or sold it.  That what our Chinese neighbor told us.

I measure the grass in the front yard today......... Still haven't decide to trim it down yet because I just love the look of the thick green color.  This grass must be different then the one that was planted/grass turf here before we bought the house.

My Chinese neighbor grass and our grass split in the middle if you look carefully and can tell.  He's lazy and never does any yard work on the house even though his parent cash it out and he's living there along with college student as roommate.  His father decide to hired some Asian people to do the cutting for them now.

I like the height and the feel of it so keeping it longer.  I did tell my husband that once we run it over with the lawn mover the grass won't be trim nice since it already too long and just going to be completely run over.

I didn't read all the comments but yes, it is grass.  You just haven't cut it for weeks.  All that it needs is to be cut.

When we put in our sod, we couldn't cut it right away so it began seeding and looked just like that.  It's fine now.
