Title: Let's Ride, into Laos???
Post by: LonelyHmgGuy on September 18, 2012, 11:34:23 AM
Hear me out... a friend of mine was in Thailand and Laos last year and he told me how beautiful the countryside was there… Lots of twisty curves, lush mountainsides and deep valleys to wet your appetites. Anyone up for a ride there?

Here is my plan…

1.   Fly into Thailand, rent streets bikes in Chaingmai.
2.   Spend a few days in Chaingmai. (New Years Celebration)
3.   Cross over to Laos. (on the ferry at Chaing Khong)
4.   Ride into Luang Prabang, spend a few days.
5.   Ride into Xieng Kouang, spend a few days.
6.   Ride into Vientiane/KM52, spend a few days.
7.   Split and visit your relatives…
8.   Meet up and ride back to Thailand.
9.   Fly home.

I figure about 3 weeks…. Prices in Thailand for bike rentals are reasonable.

Rental Rates
We have a broad range of bikes available, at the following daily rates;
•   Honda VRX 400 “Roadster Special” @ 1200 baht.
•   Honda CBR250 @ 800 baht. ( 25 US dollars per day)
•   Kawasaki Ninja 250 @ 800 baht. (25 US dollars per day)
•   Honda Super Four 400 @ 700 baht.
So, am I crazy or is anyone else up for it. So what if I don’t speak a single work in Laos or Thai… It will be the ride of a life time.

I rented a moped in Chiang Mai while I was there.  I never thought about an actual street bike or dirt bike.  Most of the place I visited only had mopeds so maybe it is wise to look online for actual moto rentals before you head there.

I wouldn't ride from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.  Rather it's a boring drive so either fly/train/bus.  I took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and it took maybe 10 hours?  The bus took about the same on the way back.  I like the train because I can drink/eat/sleep which seems faster than otherwise on the bus.

You can probably do 100MPH+ there from Chiang Mai to Bangkok.  There's really no police/patrol on the freeways/highways as I recall.

Either way enjoy if you do make this happen.  Make sure to visit the different Soy districts and watch out for beautiful lady boys  :D

Yeesh, you put "beautiful" and "lady boys" in the same sentence.

Did you go there to try to recreate the red light scene from The Hangover II?

Sadly Hangover II recreated some of the red light district scenes from me  :D... It is partially true what they said and did in that video.  I've been to a few scenes in that video and it is crazy at night.  I was there in 2009 and hopefully re-visit next year on my way to Laos...

My dad actually has a scooter there that we just bought a few months ago.  I myself probably wouldn't want to do a dirt bike or sports bike while there.  I wouldn't mind a light cafe racer though.  Maybe an older CB350 or so.

Cafe sounds like a good fit there...

How about mountain biking on the hilltops of the Hmong villages? I think that will truly be awesome and something to fulfill one day.

And easier to pack on a plane than a moto. If you have a nice one, make sure you take pictures of the Hmong in Laos' faces when telling them how much you paid for it. Got a buddy that has a $7,000 road bicycle.

I just started this sport and I have to agree that these bikes are expensive but worth every penny.
