Remember this sketch last year?

Well, I started painting it in Photoshop last year but had a difficult time blending so I took a break but I was determined to paint so I found my way around (through trial and error and a ton of youtubes) and finally learned to blend.  It wasn't so difficult to understand once I learned.  Now the hard part is getting the hang of blending.

It's going to take me a long time to finish this since I'm only painting when I'm not intimidated.

Did I mention I upgraded my Wacom Tablet this year?  I went from the Bamboo Craft to the Intuos Pro.  Wanted the Cintiq of course but realized I can never afford that unless I was a pro-artist.

Sweet Tears should illustrate one pic for us to see once. No matter how good or bad her drawing may look.  :)

Nice!

Very nice, MA. I wished I know how to draw. In grade school I have a friend who was really good at drawing those japanese animation women. I would ask her to draw me pictures all the time. Sadly, I could only draw stick figures. However, my other sister are more artisitic.

Thanks VH and SS!

I agree.  Everyone should try their hands at drawing something.  :)

I've always had a thing for eyes.  In middle school and all through high school, I always drew the eyes first and sometimes I would just leave it at that.

You got Photoshop installed in your laptop. Why don't you buy a Wacom tablet and pen for yourself so you may paint and color without difficulty?

I do have a Wacom tablet.  Two actually: a Bamboo Craft and an Intuos Pro.  I don't use the Bamboo anymore so it's in storage somewhere.

Drawing on a tablet and drawing by hand are two different things.  It's more difficult to draw on the tablet.  But I mainly don't use it for drawing at the moment because it would require sitting at my desk for long hours and right now I don't have the time for that.  What you see of what I post here are mostly chicken scratches.  Just quick 2 to 5 minute sketches whenever the urge comes.

Here's something I did yesterday.  I'm taking a watercolor class this month and it's pretty fun.  This was my first time drawing with ink pens.  I'm so used to drawing with pencil so that if I make a mistake, I can erase, but with ink pens, there's no going backwards.  What you see is what you get.  This was also done in a watercolor book so can't tear out the thick pages unless I want to ruin the book.  So many boundaries but I'm happy with the outcome.

Ink pen + watercolor.

Arno Dorian

I also once had Bamboo tablet, but it didn't suit me well so I went for Drawing Intuos. It's much better than previous tablets I owned. Two corners have two buttons and they serve as keyboard shortcuts while drawing on Photoshop or Corel Painter and browsing desktop with the pen.

Nah, drawing on a tablet and by hand are same thing. You had to adjust the feeling to the wacom pen as you were to hold onto regular pencil/pen.

Nice work on the drawing and watercoloring of Arno Dorian.

You gotta be extremely good at both drawing and animation.

I'm glad you like the Intuos Draw.  I think it's good to get what works for you.  I don't know much about the Intruos Draw but I do know that Wacom makes the best tablets for artists.  The Intuos Pro that I'm currently using is from their professional line.  I had a choice between the medium and small and I went with small because I don't have a lot of desk space and it was also enough space for me.  I may go medium in the future but it all depends on if I continue drawing...whic h I hope to.  The small for now works great.  I still don't utilize all the space on the tablet.

I guess it's different for different people on drawing.  I do draw differently on the tablet than I do by hand though.  I do a lot of other things on the tablet like editing photos, compositing, painting environments (and matte painting), Project Life, digital scrapbooking, etc. so it's put to good use.  I just don't draw on it very much.

Nice work on the drawing and watercoloring of Arno Dorian.

Thanks.  I love Disney!  It would be a ton of fun to work for Disney if I had those artists' talents and imaginations.  They are amazing.

Ink pen (Micron .03) and watercolor.

I think I'm going to invest in better watercolor paint.  I'm currently using cheapies I got on discount from Michael's.  I heard Kuretake was good.

Something I've been working on for a couple of weeks now called, "Turtle Land."  It's in gray scale so I'm still working on the feel of the concept.  Hope to paint and texture in the next few weeks.

Why not use water and brushes to blend the colors so the drawing looks more dynamic.

I didn't use watercolor paper so if I were to add water the paper would pucker and ruin it.  Plus, I shadowed using pencil so the colors would be dull if I were to watercolor over it.  Normally when I draw for the purpose of watercoloring, I don't shade with the pencil and I don't draw that dark...more likely, I'd gently sketch the outline unless I'm using Micron or Steadtler ink pens which when dry won't dull.

Took a mini drawing course on eyes since I'm an eye-drawing person.  I rarely draw round or square eyes so they were a bit of a challenge but really fun.  It feels great to broaden my eye-drawing skills.  On the left on the eyes practice, I did it facing the wrong way.  When I turned it landscape view I realized why it was difficult to fit three eyes...LOL.

I think people just don't have the time to do art.  I'm a SAHM so when the kids are in school I get to work on my art skills.

Are you even qualified to grade me?  I don't mind constructive criticism from artists and non-artitsts,  but you hardly qualify as a "teacher" to give someone a grade.

As for my practices on the eyes, that isn't my style.  I have my own style that I am very comfortable with (thus, my quickies).  The class I took was learning someone's else's style so I could build on mine.  I don't know if you know this technique but it's a way to move out of one's comfort zone and branch out to other types of styles.  I'm a heavy feature (eyes, nose, face) drawer and I'm particular to my own way.  I take art classes so that I can learn how others go about their art.  That's what a true artist does.  They keep learning even if they are already excellent.

Not bad, but nothing special.  Keep at it.  If you haven't yet, I'd recommend joining the Concept Art Facebook group.  They do a monthly challenge and everyone is very supportive and motivating, and kind in their CC.  They are also funny (the humorous kind).

I'm not qualified to grade anyone because I'm not an official art teacher (I do teach art to kids though) but I believe that just doing some kind of art is good, and therapeutic, and grows the mind.

A really sad girl.  Took about 5 minutes using black ballpoint pen and a uni-ball Signo white pen.  I used the white pen to rim her eyes and a bit on her nose and lips.  Hard to see but I'll have to do a sample on darker paper next time.

Great stuff, MA!  I really enjoy the art.  Your pictures remind me of some of the work done by my favorite artist, Yoshitaka Amano.  I'm not sure how to properly describe it, but it has a sense of fantasy blended with a unique style and maybe I'm drawn towards that kind of stuff.

Always trying something different.  This is a mixed media piece in my traveler's notebook.  The flower is a stencil.  The girl was supposed to be a stencil too but since I'm practicing on my portraits (trying different face features, etc.), decided to draw her.

So I'm here!

But dang moonangel you're pretty good!

We should create a comic book!

I write the story and you draw the pictures!
