Philippines stuns New Zealand for first-ever World Cup win. Its heroes? Californians

The Philippines stunned New Zealand 1-0 to earn its first ever Women’s World Cup victory on Tuesday off California-born Sarina Bolden’s 24th-minute goal.

Bolden’s first-half header was the country’s first ever goal in the competition’s history.

The World Cup co-host looked to have earned itself a route back into the game midway through the second half when Jacqui Hand’s looping header floated over a despairing Olivia McDaniel in goal, but it was later ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) for offside.

The World Cup debutant was able to withstand New Zealand pressure, including a truly remarkable diving save from McDaniel in added time at the end of the game, to earn a historic victory, sparking scenes of jubilant celebrations.

“I literally can’t put it into words,” Bolden said afterwards. “This has been a dream of mine as a little kid to just be here at the World Cup, let alone even score.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, the staff, the fans, the Philippines as a whole. It’s just amazing right now to feel this win and this energy in this stadium right now, so it’s just amazing.”

...when it doesn't have to be. My trip at Walmart should only take a few minutes but ended up taking 45 minutes due to the FRAUDs "negative" behaviors like at this Walgreens in SF so they ended up chaining and locking things up.. :idiot2::

"Though typical, in the 30 minutes that we were at this Walgreens, we watched three people, including this man, steal," Lah said as a man walked out of the store. "Did that guy pay?" Lah asked a Walgreens employee. "No," the employee responded.

Driver who lost trailer on S.C. interstate now facing charges

The man who lost his trailer on Interstate 77 and caused a serious crash earlier this month is now facing charges, Channel 9 learned this week.

The crash happened on July 8 between Mt. Holly Road and Lancaster Highway, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. A trailer became disconnected from the pickup truck and then glided across the median of the highway before hitting several vehicles.

It was even caught on camera:

The crash is also drawing attention to South Carolina laws, with some saying there’s not enough to prevent crashes involving trailers.

That includes drivers like Michael Roberson, who says he always goes the extra mile to make sure any trailer he pulls is secure.

“I pull a trailer myself, and I have a tow kit,” Roberson said.

But he knows that’s not the case with every driver.

Back in 2013, advocates for tougher state laws started petitioning lawmakers, asking them to pass a bill that would prevent deaths by requiring brake lights and turn signals on trailers. They also pushed to have trailers inspected.

That legislation never passed.

After the incident earlier this month sent three people to the hospital, two state lawmakers say they’re taking a closer look at the issue.

“I feel like there’s some opportunities there to drill down a little deeper for safety issues,” said state Rep. Tommy Pope of Rock Hill.

Roberson says he hopes the conversation will lead to change.

“There should be some kind of regulation, or more regulation,” he said.

Channel 9 learned that the two people with the most serious injuries following the trailer crash have since been released from the hospital

So he bought an aftermarket gas cap but want his ignition key to work on it. He called around and some Locksmiths were quoting him "$200" so I'm like, let me help you out.

Here are the two options...

Option 1: Just grind off the wafers that don't align with the key..

Pro: easier, saves time...Con: the remaining wafers will still lock the cap but won't be as strong because instead of 6, there may only be 2-3 wafers left to lock it.

Option 2: Pull the wafers out and re-align it so it'll fit the new key...

pros: most if not all the wafers will remain to lock the cap...Con: takes more time as the lock cylinder will have to be disassembled to get the wafers out to re-align.

I went with option 2 because it's better IMO:

Why men lose all their friends in midlife
At some point it becomes suddenly, disconcertingl y clear that we have very few pals left

Five times a year. That’s how often I see the friends I have left. It feels like slim pickings for a man with my winning personality. What happens to male friendship in middle age? The question comes with a pang. Am I missing out, or deficient in some way? I mean, I have plenty of friends. Well, I have a decent number of friends. OK, I have a few friends.

I’ve talked myself into a kind of loneliness that’s hard to justify given that I’m surrounded by so much familial love. (“Poor widdle me,” as Kim Jong-il once sang in Team America.) I’m both envious of those who appear to have lots of friends and suspicious of how they’ve acquired them.

“Friends” is a dominant theme of the cliché-industrial complex, appearing in an endless feed of Facebook platitudes and Instagram posts. Taylor Swift said, “All you need to do to be my friend is like me”, which is either very profound or very stupid. Let’s assume it’s the former and that a definition of friendship is unconditional affection, rather than needy sycophancy. If I’m Billy No Mates, and Taylor is correct, then it means I don’t like many people and they don’t like me. So I appear to have brought this on myself.

This phobia of being clubbable is perhaps best expressed in a passage from Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22, when Colonel Korn finally consents to send Yossarian home from the war on one condition.

“What must I do?”

Colonel Korn laughed curtly.“Like us.”

Yossarian blinked. “Like you?”

“That’s right,” said Colonel Korn. “Like us. Join us. Be our pal … Become one of the boys. Now, that isn’t asking too much, is it?”

“That isn’t going to be too easy.”

To truly like a person, you need trust, and that requires emotional investment – an increasingly rare commodity as you age – so as old friends fade away, they cannot simply be replaced. The space to build trust with newcomers is just not there.

Most often your partner becomes your best friend by default, which is no bad thing, while an imperceptible drift from sociability takes place over the years – sometimes it’s because of children, sometimes physical distance, sometimes lifestyle choices, like religion or polyamory.

Lasting significance
It doesn’t help that three of my oldest friends are currently unavailable. Of the men I spent most of my youth and young manhood with, one is in Los Angeles, another lives an alternative lifestyle in Devon and the third joined me in a spectacular falling out that killed our 30-year relationship overnight (mostly my fault, naturally).

It’s easier to be blasé and picky when you are young. There are so many friends to choose from and so many relationships you can roll into and out of again without the sense of any lasting significance. Having so few friends can’t be foreseen at 21, but maturity nudges out the immediate need, with the hours dominated by family and work. Once-intense friendships blow up or become diffuse, yet I still see other men managing it better than me.

Moments of envy that other men my age have armies of besties are countered by the cynical assumption that to have so many must mean a decent proportion are false or flimsy in some way. If friendship means something, then how can it be so effortless for these mysteriously popular men, who dangle their mates like an ageing hipster’s neck chains?

The more I witness friendship groups treating Glastonbury like a middle-aged Christmas (“only six sleeps to Glastonbury”), the less I want to know. It’s the fun that really puts me off. I carry the remembrance of festivals past, which is enough to dissuade me now. It’s great if 250,000 people want to enjoy music and drugs in a pop-up town with less diversity than Antiques Roadshow, but don’t sell it to me as a return to Eden. This is the kind of sentiment that evinces comments such as “I feel sorry for you”. They’re not necessary. I already feel sorry for myself.

Design and necessity
Apparently there is a dire need for a safe space for men, which is a bit like saying grey squirrels need a safe space from red ones. But I would concede there is a particular state of ease that’s only possible for men among other men.

There is also consolation that with those few friends you have left, months or even years between meetings are written off with the wave of a hand. Just as well really. This is when you notice the unfettered affection and loyalty male friends feel for each other. It’s kept simple by design and necessity.

Having lost interest in football I’ve destroyed 50 per cent of my conversation options – and I wasn’t exactly Bantersaurus Rex to begin with. Male bonding is sometimes little more than a home-cooked version of a radio phone-in on an infinite loop.

True male friendship is paradoxical, in that it is intimate without intimacy. Men neither touch each other physically nor discuss anything directly – what is said out loud is trivial and everything important is unspoken. If a subtext is identified, it’s quickly ignored before moving on, since no man wants to turn a subtext into an actual text over a few beers.

Like a lot of things about getting older, acceptance is the only meaningful response. My friends are real. My loneliness isn’t. It’s a product of a faulty memory and an ego that hasn’t yet burnt itself out. At least we have yacht rock to talk about. During those occasional and precious tribal gatherings, you all become carriers of each other’s memories, like the shaman or village poets who guard the oral history of your collective lives.

If you want lots of friends, you will probably have lots of friends. Therefore, if I don’t have many, I must not need many to begin with. Either that or I’m unbearable. Answers on a postcard, please. But don’t expect a friendly reply.

Man Scores New Tesla Model 3 for $13,620 With Rebate Bonanza
Stack up enough incentives and you can score a Tesla Model 3 for Mitsubishi Mirage money.

Since the chip shortage raged during the pandemic, good deals have been harder to come by in the auto market. If you're in California and looking for an EV, though, you might be lucky enough to score a Tesla for well under $20,000 thanks to a cavalcade of available rebates.

This week, a user named Zohar on Twitter outlined the smoking hot deal they got on a brand new Tesla Model 3. Based in California, he scored the car for just $13,620 before taxes and fees. After paying the $1,390 delivery charge and the local 9.25% tax rate, the price came to $18,525.93. That's an insane price to pay for a car with a recommended retail price that started at $41,240.

Bought for $500, the Very First 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Is for Sale for $2.2M

The very first 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda is up for sale. Not one of the first, not one of those pseudo-rare muscle cars that happened to roll off the factory line on a Tuesday instead of a Thursday; this is the real deal. And the person who is selling it acquired it for just $500 in June 1983, and is now selling it for the astronomical price of $2.2 million.

Originally, Gary Dodane tried to auction the car with a reserve of $3.2 million and the car failed to sell. Bidding stalled at $2 million, which is still a huge number. Though this Cuda is extremely significant amongst muscle car collectors. While it is the first Hemi Cuda, it also has some options that make it an excellent example of a Cuda. Its serial number suggests that it is the third Cuda, but the first two were scrapped during production. Still, this Cuda is painted in Alpine White with a black interior, with deleted stripes, an unusual tachometer delete, an overhead console, premium trim, and the ever-important four-speed manual transmission

Video Shows Deputy Body-Slamming Trans Man After Driver Allegedly Flipped Him Off
The Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy claimed that he stopped the man over his car's air freshener. The man’s attorney said the violence, which left him with a concussion, was retaliatory.

A newly released video shows a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy violently throwing a transgender man to the ground during a traffic stop allegedly over an air freshener, though the man’s attorney said it was payback for the driver flipping off the deputy.

The video, which was taken back in February but recently obtained by local news outlets, shows the deputy pulling up behind the man’s parked car at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Whittier, just southeast of Los Angeles, and then quickly grabbing him after he exits his vehicle.

“Come here. I just stopped you,” the deputy tells him while approaching.

“No you didn’t. Get your hands off me,” the man responds as the deputy grabs for his arms and takes him down to the ground.

The man, identified as Emmett Brock, screams for help while pinned face-down beneath the deputy, who shouts for him to put his hands behind his back.

“I can’t, you have my hand!” Brock repeatedly shouts. “I’m not resisting. Stop, stop!”

Brock’s attorney said he was repeatedly punched in his head, resulting in a concussion.

“He must’ve punched him eight to 10 times in the head, maliciously,” attorney Thomas Beck told Fox 11 News. “There was no reason for the contact. It was purely retaliatory.”

The deputy, identified as Joseph Benza, claimed that he stopped Brock for having an air freshener hanging from his rearview mirror, according to the arrest report obtained by Fox 11 News.

Many states prohibit objects from being hung from rearview mirrors over concerns they can obstruct the driver’s view. Civil rights advocates have argued that the law gives police an excuse to unfairly target and pull over minorities. Daunte Wright, a Black Minnesota motorist, was fatally shot by police in 2021 during a traffic stop that authorities said was initiated due to his air freshener.

Last year the Los Angeles Police Department said it would put limits on such pretextual traffic stops as the stops were disproportiona lly targeting the city’s Black and Latino residents.

Brock was taken into custody on charges of mayhem, causing serious injury to a deputy, resisting arrest and failing to obey a lawful order. While being booked into a holding cell, he was forced to physically expose himself to the staff after they questioned his gender. He was ultimately placed among women, Beck said.

As for why physical force was used, the deputy said in his arrest report that he tackled Brock because it appeared as though he might try to punch him. Once on the ground, he said Brock bit him and that his injuries “could result in permanent disfigurement,” though medics who examined him did not cite any evidence of him being bit. He did have a fractured right hand from what was described as a “punching injury,” The Los Angeles Times reported citing a copy of an emergency room report.

Beck said the incident was retaliatory because it followed Brock making an obscene gesture at the sheriff’s deputy on the side of the road. He did this because he saw the deputy having a heated discussion with a woman.

Brock continued driving and soon saw the deputy closely following his vehicle. The driver mirrored his turns, prompting Brock to call 911 to see if someone could confirm whether it was in fact a sheriff’s deputy or an imposter since the vehicle had not turned on its lights to pull him over, said Beck, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The entire incident was reviewed through the Sheriff’s department’s force review progress and the deputy was cleared of wrongdoing. His use of force was described as “objectively reasonable” by one sergeant, according to the Times.

A sheriff’s department spokesperson confirmed Monday that an internal investigation into the incident is underway, though they declined to say whether the deputy remains on active duty.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department takes all use of force incidents seriously. The Department is investigating the information and allegations brought forward by Mr. Brock and his attorney. Unfortunately, we cannot comment any further at this time due to the pending litigation in this matter,” the department said in a statement.
